Star Wars as a series has existed for more than four decades, with a multitude of films, TV shows, books, video games, and other tie-in merchandise based on its universe having been created during its run. It's without a doubt one of the biggest media franchises of all time, and with that amount of fame comes a dedicated fandom.

While fandoms on social media sites like Reddit are constantly in danger of devolving into group-think, there's always going to be that one guy with an unpopular opinion to shake things up. Whether or not those unpopular opinions are actually true is debatable, especially in the case of Star Wars.

Jake Lloyd Was A Good Anakin

Jake Lloyd as young Anakin on Tatooine in The Phantom Menace

Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin in The Phantom Menace, was ridiculed by Star Wars fans for his performance. The constant bullying and harassment from both his schoolmates and the media led Lloyd to prematurely end his acting career. In 2017, fellow Star Wars alum Mark Hamill said that he was "still angry about the way they treated [Lloyd]."

Reddit user u/MoonbearMitya agreed, saying that "all children are cringe" already and that "he wasn't honestly that bothered by" Lloyd's acting.

Return Of The Jedi Had A Disappointing Ending

u/Pancake_muncher claims Return of the Jedi has "a huge let down ending" and it makes The Empire Strikes Back harder to watch.

Plenty of criticisms have been made of Return of the Jedi's plot, from complaints about lackluster battle sequences to full-blown Ewok hatred, but the ending wasn't nearly as divisive as the other two trilogy-cappers (Revenge of the Sith and The Rise of Skywalker). This truly is an unpopular opinion.

Luke Skywalker Was Done Perfectly In The Last Jedi

While u/werothegreat seems to acknowledge that the way Luke Skywalker was portrayed in The Last Jedi (as a reclusive "sadsack") was controversial with everyone from fans to Hamill himself, they actually still like that version of the character.

Considering one of the main reasons The Last Jedi has so many haters is that many fans believed it completely dumped on Luke's legacy, this is one of the most unpopular opinions out there.

The Knights Of The Old Republic Series Isn't That Great

Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic

Bioware's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its successors have been hailed by various video-game-centric publications as some of the best fantasy titles ever made, responsible for adding layers upon layers of interesting stories and characters to the Star Wars mythos.

Yet, while u/The5Virtues seems to know their opinion is likely to get them "eviscerated", they think the entire series is "rubbish."

The Disney Era Is Better Than The Lucas Era

One of the biggest debates in the Star Wars community is between two different factions of people who think the franchise is dead. On one side, those who think George Lucas ruined it with the prequel trilogy, and on the other, people who think Disney ruined it with the sequel trilogy.

However, not a lot of people think Disney's output was actually better than Lucas' overall, especially considering Lucas created the series itself. An exception would be this user, who says "everything from the Disney era is better than anything from George Lucas" because "Lucas created such an amazing world to play in, but everything new has taken what he did great and made it infinitely better."

The Clone Wars Is Overrated

Star Wars How to watch The Clone Wars

The computer-animated series The Clone Wars premiered in 2008 and recently aired its seventh and final season on Disney+. It's earned its fair share of praise from the Star Wars community, much of it for re-contextualizing the prequels and introducing great new characters like Hondo Ohnaka and Ahsoka Tano.

u/Backwater_Buccaneer disagrees with the general consensus that the Clone Wars was a "shining redemption of the prequels", however, offering their argument that the series has just as much of a "childish thematic approach" as the prequels themselves and that it feels like "12 movies' worth of screen time just to add a little extra context."

There's Nothing Wrong With Midi-chlorians

Qui-Gon Jinn takes Anakin Skywalker's midichlorian count

When first introduced in The Phantom Menace, Midi-chlorians were bashed as simply a terrible plot device. To a lot of people, they seemed arbitrary and didn't really make much sense (some even thought, mistakenly, that midi-chlorians were the Force).

However, a few fans, including u/tomjoad2020ad (who says "I am one of the people who has absolutely no problem with the concept of midi-chlorians") and u/MetalGearSlayer (who says they're "a good addition to the canon") have chosen to differ from public opinion and accept midi-chlorians for their role in the series.

The Millenium Falcon Is Awful

The Millennium Falcon as it's shown in Force Awakens

Here's an opinion that it might be genuinely hard for hardcore fans of the series to reconcile: u/NotJeff_Goldblum's claim that the Millenium Falcon is "an incredibly ugly ship."

The light freighter, used across the Star Wars series by characters such as Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, and Rey, has become iconic and can be instantly associated with the franchise just by appearance. It has many fans, but apparently, this anti-Goldblum isn't one of them.

Jar Jar Binks Was Never A Bad Character

Jar Jar Binks

The clumsy Gungan character Jar Jar Binks was criticized upon the release of The Phantom Menace as annoying, ugly, and toyetic, but the severe amount of hatred that was directed at him was unprecedented. The fans took it way too far, launching a movement against the character that included actor Ahmed Best being sent death threats.

However, u/TheChubbyKoala is among Jar Jar's fans, saying they don't "just tolerate him... [they're] actually amused by a lot of his scenes."

The Jedi Are Evil

It may sound crazy, but it is not completely off. u/MartinSimms' claim that the Jedi are evil isn't so much an opinion as it is a theory; the popular film analysis YouTube channel "The Film Theorists" even made a video about the idea.

It would seem there are a lot of points to support it, given the Jedi Order's cult-like practices (among other things), but at the same time, the Jedi being the villains is definitely a hard thing for fans of the series — and its heroes — to accept.
