A recent Ubisoft job listing hints that the publisher’s upcoming Star Wars game could allow players to pilot classic vehicles from across the franchise - along with a few new ones. Ubisoft announced that The Division developer Massive Entertainment was working on a story-driven open-world Star Wars game back in January as part of a new initiative by Disney and Lucasfilm Games to branch out the franchise's video game division. Disney was inspired to grant Ubisoft the rights to produce an open-world Star Wars title by Ubisoft’s work on the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which led to talks between the two companies in 2019.

While details about the upcoming game have been few and far between in the months since it was first unveiled, the internet has been filled with speculation over the first open-world Star Wars game, with fans curious to know which of the franchise's many distinct eras it will be set in, or what features it might borrow from other Ubisoft sandbox titles like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. While there's still much about the project to be revealed, Ubisoft Massive will utilize the Snowdrop Engine from The Division 2 to bring its version of the iconic Galaxy Far, Far, Away to life.

As reported by GameRant, Ubisoft Bucharest (one of the studios helping Massive with its open-world Star Wars game) shared a job listing for Senior Vehicle Artist on the Ubisoft website earlier this week. This listing mentions “both authentic and fictional vehicles,” implying that Ubisoft’s Star Wars title will feature brand new vehicles in addition to the franchise’s traditional space fighters and land-based hovercrafts. This Senior Vehicle Artist will be tasked with researching these vehicles to make sure they remain authentic to the existing Star Wars lore, as well as managing the development team's work in implementing them. The job listing suggests that ships will be a key part of the gameplay, with the post specifically calling for applicants with experience in crafting highly realistic vehicles. This could mean that aerial combat, races, or travel are a key component of the upcoming release.

new ubisoft star wars game should not be canon

The Star Wars universe is home to several iconic vehicles that would be fun to explore an open-world with, from space-fairing fighters like the Rebel Alliance’s X-Wing and The Mandalorian’s signature Razor’s Crest to more grounded transports like the desert-fairing Landspeeder and fast-paced Swoop Bikes. It is still too early to tell which of these famous vehicles will be available to pilot in Ubisoft Massive’s upcoming Star Wars game, but getting a chance to explore the Galaxy Far, Far Away behind the controls of any one of them is certainly an exciting prospect.

It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Star Wars gaming fan, as several other titles are in the works aside from Ubisoft Massive’s game. Longtime Star Wars PC port developer Ayspr is working on the long-hoped-for current-gen remake of the beloved Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, and EA is still producing titles like the much-discussed sequel to 2019’s hit Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Finally, during last week’s The Game Awards 2021 livestream event, Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream announced Star Wars Eclipse, a seemingly darker take on the franchise set in the long-ago era of the High Republic. How Ubisoft's game will fit into the future of Star Wars games remains to be seen, but hopes are high.
