The TV shows of the Star Wars canon are a beloved and crucial part of the overall Star Wars story, and right up there in terms of adoration is The Clone Wars. While it has its low points, the show has such immense highs that some of its stories are generally seen as better than some movies. Not all fans agree on the show, though.
As can be seen on Reddit, there are many unpopular opinions out there about the animated show. Whether it be opinions on characters, story arcs, or the overall nature of the show, the site shows some opinions that would shock some fans.
The Show Has No Real Danger
The Clone Wars, particularly the latter few seasons, are known for the emotional depth and heartbreak within them, with this happening a few times due to character deaths like Satine and Fives.
A deleted Redditor believes that the show has "no danger" and that everyone knows "the characters survive." While this is true for characters like Anakin, Obi-Wan, and other movie and Rebels characters, there is still danger. Any clone and beloved side/recurring character could go at any moment, and any manner of heartbreaking event could occur to the main characters of the show.
Disliking Bo-Katan Kryze
One of the most popular and one of the most badass characters to come out of The Clone Wars was Bo-Katan Kryze, sister of Satine, and a warrior through and through, a brilliant character in the canon.
Redditor u/Red-Raptor3 disliked Bo-Katan, to the point where they hoped she would not appear in The Mandalorian. Of course, Bo-Katan did pop up and was incredible in that show, just like she was in The Clone Wars and Rebels for many Star Wars fans.
Fox Is Not As Bad As People Think
There are many hated characters in The Clone Wars. Some for being so villainous fans love to hate them, some for being intolerable, and then some like Fox, who are hated for the actions he performs, even if it is not necessarily his fault.
Redditor u/Captain_NorthAmerica does not believe Fox is "as bad as everyone thinks he is." There are some arguments for this; he was only following orders after all. However, killing instead of stunning Fives is pretty unforgivable; even all the Ahsoka stuff is not as bad as that. Fives deserved better from Fox.
Ahsoka Tano Gets In The Way Of Anakin & Obi-Wan's Relationship
There is no doubt Anakin and Obi-Wan have one of the best and most popular friendships in Star Wars, and that is a huge part of The Clone Wars, with Ahsoka Tano adding another layer to their dynamic.
Redditor u/Tytharius believed not only did Ahsoka never grow out of the childish sidekick role, but she got in the way of the more interesting Anakin/Obi-Wan relationship. Anakin and Obi-Wan's friendship is one of the best and most interesting, and one explored in The Clone Wars. However, to say a character as great and popular as she is got in the way of their relationship is not an opinion often voiced.
Mortis Was Bad
A few arcs heralded as one of the best in The Clone Wars has to offer has been Mortis arc. Often seen as one of the most creative explorations of the Force and into the title of the Chosen One, in the prequel era, it is a popular story.
However, Redditor u/ThatsALotAChris believes it to be "one of the worst stories ever done in canon," despite liking the show overall. Some fans have this opinion, holding similar criticisms with "A World Between Worlds." For the majority who enjoy or are interested in the arc, though, they have far different views.
The Show Does Not Improve Obi-Wan & Anakin's Prequel Relationship
Going back to the relationship of Obi-Wan and Anakin, it is one of the many aspects of the prequels fans believed was improved on in The Clone Wars, with both getting further exploration as individuals and a pair.
Redditor u/MurderousPauper says the show did help them appreciate their relationship in the vacuum of The Clone Wars, but because they believe the characters are so different from the prequel counterparts, their prequel relationship was not improved. Many fans would suggest otherwise, citing the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin as a crucial aspect of the prequels made more layered and enjoyable due to The Clone Wars.
Padmé Was Stupid (& Made Things Easier For Palpatine)
Speaking of prequel characters getting improved by The Clone Wars, Padmé Amidala falls in that category, with the show expanding on her fierceness, intelligence, and how much she frustrated Palpatine and his plans.
Feeling the complete opposite is u/CommanderL, who believed every Padmé episode was boring and that she herself came across as stupid at times. A further comment from u/Grommert who believed she made everything easier for Palpatine despite the events of "Pursuit of Peace," where an impassioned speech from Padmé prevented a piece of legislation from going through that Palpatine sorely wanted to use Republic money on more troops.
Anakin In The Clone Wars Is A Better Character & Wouldn't Have Turned.
Anakin Skywalker is perhaps the prequel trilogy character who benefits most from The Clone Wars, with so many gaps in his character being filled in and fans finding his eventual turn far more believable due to the events of the show.
Redditor u/Atalanhero believes that not only is The Clone Wars Anakin a better character, but one so far removed from the prequels that he would never have turned on the order. This is definitely unpopular given how the events of Attack of the Clones, combined with Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order, the Jedi Council's constant mistrust, and others all helping to build Revenge of the Sith's version of Anakin.
Maul Should Not Have Been Brought Back
One of The Clone Wars' biggest achievements was resurrecting Maul and making him into one of Star Wars' best and most powerful villains, with nearly every episode featuring the character.
Despite this, Redditor u/Durp004 still believes it to be a terrible idea, achieving nothing more than wasting Savage Opress' character. Given the quality of Maul-driven storylines not only in The Clone Wars but in Rebels and the extended canon, most fans would disagree with his return being a terrible idea, even if there were initial doubts years ago.
The Siege of Mandalore Is Overrated
Some of Maul's best outings in The Clone Wars came in the widely adored final arc of the show, the Siege of Mandalore, an arc presented like a movie, with so much brilliance packed into it. It is a story many fans believe surpasses movies of the saga on its own.
One such fan is not Redditor u/Kerouac_5, who believes the arc is just good, nothing special, not as perfect as most fans have made out. Even if the arc does risk becoming overrated by many, it is so excellently crafted and wonderful yet painful to watch for fans. To most, it will forever be the perfect end to an incredible show and a story that transcends the series quality-wise.
