EA has reiterated the previous disappointing promise not to support Star Wars: Squadrons with any DLC, even despite the fact that excited fans are wanting it to happen. This is a reasonable demand from the audience considering how good the dogfighting title turned out to be.

According to the ScreenRant’s review of Star Wars: Squadrons, the game is simply excellent and full of fun for both newcomers and seasoned veterans of flight simulators. While there’re certain challenges in learning how to efficiently control spaceships, the flight simulator isn’t too complicated to understand and eventually master. In that stance, multiplayer is obviously the best choice due to its gameplay diversity as none of the sessions are the same. Star Wars: Squadrons brilliantly serves its purpose of delivering the best possible dogfighting experience while staying authentic and true to the source material.

While the initial reveal that Star Wars: Squadrons would not receive any additional content was pretty scarce on details, the new information finally sheds the light on the reasons behind such a discouraging decision. In a conversation with UploadVR, creative director Ian Frazier explained that the game is not being treated as a live service title. Such an approach goes two ways as while it effectively means that there are no microtransactions, there’s no additional content planned either. According to Frazier, it was never the development team’s intention to launch a game that was half-done. Instead, Star Wars: Squadrons is a complete package that is likely to remain intact. The creative director goes as far as stating that the game was treated as an old-school release just like when customers paid money for a fully finished project.

Overall, the post-launch support comes down to polishing the experience and fishing out bugs as the initial release was fairly spoiled with numerous technical issues. For starters, Star Wars: Squadrons on PC caused a lot of problems with the anticipated HOTAS controls’ support as the game was rendering unplayable dead zones when using specialized joysticks for flight sims. Another issue was the performance instability expressed in fps drops and stuttering issues. In that regard, the game still has a long way to go to reach a perfect technical state, although gameplay-wise, it’s already close to a masterpiece.

While the sheer fact that Star Wars: Squadrons won’t be treated with new content is harsh enough to sadden devoted fans, it is completely understandable why the old-school approach leaves players frustrated. The modern audience is used to games shipping with unreleased content, which is later used to compose DLCs and paid updates. Contrary to that, Star Wars: Squadrons is a complete package, although it could benefit from a couple of additional spaceships. Whether EA’s approach changes over time, considering the game’s performance in sales, remains to be seen.
