Since Disney acquired LucasFilm, and Star Wars along with it, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding the return of the franchise. We know for certain that there will be a new trilogy of films beginning with Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens later this year. Additionally, there will be spinoff films released between each official episode. The first spinoff will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) from a script written by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass), though there are many rumors surrounding the plot of the movie.
Now, a new rumor - or, rather, an old rumor with a new face - is circling an unspecified Star Wars spinoff film. Specifically, the rumor claims Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) is being eyed to play Han Solo in a film about the iconic character’s origins.
In a report from British tabloid The Sun (that hasn’t been posted online but has been reported by Daily Mail), Egerton is being eyed to play a younger version of Harrison Ford’s character in an origin story. According to Daily Mail, the film will delve into “how Harrison Ford's iconic character got the Millennium Falcon and as well as showing how he fell out with Jabba the Hutt.”
It should be noted that a Han Solo standalone film has been a rumor surrounding the Star Wars franchise for many years, but the rumors have recently returned in force. One report claimed Han Solo and Boba Fett could appear in a spinoff together - contradicting an older rumor that these characters would each get their own film. Additionally, a more recent report claimed Han Solo will be the central character of Edwards’ Star Wars feature.
Although this rumor from The Sun should be taken with a massive grain of salt, it makes sense if certain other rumors turn out to be true or, in some cases, false. Which is to say, if Edwards’ spinoff film is in fact focused on Han Solo, rather than previous reports that the character wouldn’t appear at all. Since casting is currently underway for Edwards’ movie, the Han Solo role would need to be cast soon, lending a kernel of truth to Egerton being eyed for the role.
With all that being said, there’s also the question of whether Egerton would be good in the role as Han Solo. While his turn as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in Kingsman: The Secret Service could offer enough evidence that Egerton is equipped to take on the iconic role, others may have a hard time envisioning the young Welsh actor as Han Solo.
Of course, depending on which rumors (if any) turn out to be true, Star Wars fans may not need worry about whether or not Egerton could tackle a younger version of the character made popular by Harrison Ford. Despite all the rumors surrounding the Star Wars spinoffs, we won’t know what’s true until official announcements are made.
