Mostly known for producing Fox's X-Men films (and soon to make his directorial debut with X-Men Dark Phoenix), Simon Kinberg is reportedly still writing a brand new Star Wars film. The producer has been involved in the space opera for quite some time, being one of the writers, producers, and co-creators of Star Wars Rebels, which is set to wrap up its four-year run this Monday, March 5th.
Currently, outside of Star Wars' main saga films, there are two new series of movies confirmed: one being developed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi helmer, Rian Johnson, and another from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Not much is known regarding either upcoming projects, but word has it that they won't have anything to do with the episodic films and we presume that they'll start rolling out in 2020. But with this interesting tidbit, it seems like there are a couple more projects that Lucasfilm is still developing.
Deadline reports that Kinberg is "currently writing a forthcoming Star Wars movie" but didn't add any more details as to the mysterious project. For a time, there have been rumors that the producer is slated to team up with Lawrence Kasdan to write and produce Episodes VIII and IX. Obviously, that did not come to fruition, instead, he got a special "Thanks" credit on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But Kinberg remained involved in the franchise with Rebels. Kinberg was also attached to write the movie set to be directed by Josh Trank, which was rumored to be a Boba Fett standalone film. However, when Trank stepped down from the project, the film was delayed to 2020. Though there's been no update on Trank's former Star Wars project since 2015, a Boba Fett standalone film is reportedly still in development.
Now, we're unsure whether the new report is referring to bounty hunter film or if it's an entirely different project for Kinberg, especially now that a Boba Fett spin-off is supposedly still (or back) on the docket for Lucasfilm. But if the writers behind Rebels - including Kinberg - proved anything, it's that the franchise can successfully branch out from the episodic movies without losing its Star Wars flare. Despite not penning any more stories in the latter seasons of the show, Kinberg wrote the show's premiere episodes and finales for both the first and second seasons.
Aside from the aforementioned films, there are a slew of rumored movies from Lucasfilm in various stages of development. While we're unsure where the Skywalker saga will go after Star Wars 9 (rumor has it that it could be the end), there are a few offshoot films centering on characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master Yoda and even Jabba the Hutt. Nothing is confirmed out of the bunch, but given that the company is pushing for their anthologies, it's not impossible that these characters will headline their own feature films in the future. That said, the fate of these spin-offs still largely hinges on the success (or failure) of the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story movie directed by Ron Howard. The production process for the prequel is less than ideal, but the trailers have somehow quelled fears that it won't live up to the hype.
