The Star Wars Disney+ release slate is jam-packed for 2023, as many TV shows are set to debut or return for their latest seasons. Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Star Wars has delved even further into what George Lucas began, allowing the franchise to become one of the leading transmedia series'. This is largely thanks to the success of Disney+, with Lucasfilm's most popular project, The Mandalorian, ushering in a new age of Star Wars on the small screen.

2023 has already become one of the most exciting years to date, with releases of Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2, The Mandalorian season 3, Star Wars: Visions volume 2, and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. The Mandalorian era has now become the launchpad for a shared universe of Disney+ TV shows building up to an event movie, directed by George Lucas' protégé Dave Filoni himself. Aside from the aforementioned releases already on the streaming service that hit in the first half of 2023, the future remains bright for Star Wars on Disney+ with two more shows releasing this year and multiple exciting projects slated for 2024 and beyond.

Ahsoka

Release Date: August 23, 2023

The next Disney+ TV show set in The Mandalorian era, Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson as the titular character. The series increasingly feels like a spiritual successor to Star Wars Rebels, with several other significant characters from the animated series confirmed to be cast for live-action. Lucasfilm released the first trailer for Ahsoka at Star Wars Celebration 2023, where Lars Mikkelsen was confirmed to be playing the role of Grand Admiral Thrawn - a classic antagonist from the old Star Wars Expanded Universe who's already been incorporated into the Disney canon via the aforementioned Star Wars Rebels.

With the Ahsoka show's release date confirmed for August 23, 2023, more information about the series is being revealed. Aside from Dawson and Mikkelsen as the two pillars of the show, the rest of the cast has taken shape. When concerning the other characters returning from Star Wars Rebels, Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will portray Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla respectively. Also confirmed to return is Ezra Bridger, played in live-action by Eman Esfandi. Also returning from past Star Wars projects are Genevieve O’Reilly and Hayden Christensen as Mon Mothma and Anakin Skywalker respectively.

Alongside the familiar faces of old Star Wars characters are some new cast members. The late Ray Stephenson will play Baylan Skoll, a former Jedi who survived Order 66 before becoming a mercenary for hire. Alongside Stephenson will be Ivanna Sahkno as Shin Hati, another mysterious lightsaber-wielding character. The two, alongside Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, will make up Ahsoka’s villainous roster, supporting Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn. With many surprises sure to be in store, fans will have to wait until August 23, 2023, to see the next installment in the New Republic era when Ahsoka releases on Disney+.
