Hayden Christensen’s potential return to the Star Wars universe in the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show can fix one of the sequels’ biggest mistakes – here’s how. The Star Wars universe keeps expanding with new content, this time focusing on television and streaming more than on the big screen. The franchise as the world knows it began in 1977 with the film now known as Star Wars: A New Hope, which along with the sequels Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, form what’s collectively known as the original trilogy.

Years later, a new trilogy explored the backstory of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), from his days as a young slave in Tatooine to his rise as Sith Lord Darth Vader. Following the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, the studio brought a new trilogy with the purpose of closing the Skywalker saga and introducing a new generation of heroes and villains. However, the sequel trilogy wasn’t the big conclusion to the Star Wars saga that fans were expecting, and many elements and characters from the previous films were not even mentioned, among those Anakin Skywalker.

Darth Vader was teased as an important piece in the sequels as his grandson, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), was looking to “finish what he started”, but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that the presence and voice of Vader that Kylo Ren felt was nothing more than a manipulation from Palpatine. The sequels focused more on Darth Vader than Anakin Skywalker, even though he’s the most important character in the saga and was redeemed at the end of Return of the Jedi, thus why he was able to return as a Force Ghost. Anakin was the Chosen One, the one who brought balance to the Force, yet no one – not even Luke, who witnessed his redemption – mentioned him once. The Star Wars sequels also missed a big opportunity to bring Anakin (and Hayden Christensen) back as a Force Ghost, especially in Rise of Skywalker, instead having him just as a voice cameo. All this can change if Christensen joins Disney+’s TV series focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi, which can easily fix the sequels’ mistake.

Star Wars Hayden Christensen Anakin Skywalker Obi-Wan Kenobi

Christensen is rumored to return to Star Wars in the Obi-Wan TV show, meaning Disney+ would do what the sequels refused to or were too scared to do. Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show will be set eight years after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, so Christensen would be playing Darth Vader rather than Anakin Skywalker, but his fall would still be somewhat fresh, and references to who he was prior to his turn to the dark side can be made – which is exactly what all of Disney’s Star Wars properties have been missing (except for The Clone Wars, but the series began before Disney’s acquisition).

Surely, the Star Wars prequels don’t have the best reputation, which took a big toll on Christensen’s career, as he was constantly criticized for his performance as Anakin Skywalker, but time heals most wounds and Star Wars fans have come to forgive Christensen in recent years. This makes it easier for Disney to bring him back as they don’t have to worry about fans complaining or losing interest on the show just because they have Hayden Christensen reprising his role from the prequels.
