The Star Wars sequel trilogy followed its characters' - both old and new - journeys through the galaxy as the fight between the light and dark sides of the Force raged on, and throughout the story came moments when a character's words acted as the perfect summation of both their personality and narrative.

Notably absent from these characters is Chewbacca, and although the Wookiee remains a mainstay of the franchise, interpretations of his growls come from other characters, making direct quotes hard to come by for those not versed in Shyriiwook!

Luke Skywalker

"No One's Ever Really Gone."

Luke Skywalker draws his lightsaber in The Last Jedi

Some of the best original trilogy callbacks came from Luke's appearances in the sequel trilogy, and this quote enforces how his long-held belief in the redemption of others persists.

Spoken to Leia during the pair's emotional reunion in The Last Jedi, concerning Ben Solo's shifting loyalties, this moment alludes to the idea that Luke's memory of the lingering good in Darth Vader allows him to hold onto hope for his nephew, despite the guilt he feels about his own involvement in Ben's turn.

Han Solo

"That's Not How The Force Works!"

Han Solo in Star Wars The Force Awakens

Although there were many unexpected things to happen in the sequel trilogy, Han Solo's wit was no surprise, illustrated by his incredulous reaction to Finn's ideas of the Force in The Force Awakens.

This quote was not just a funny moment though, because it also showed Han's longstanding practical approach to life, even in a galaxy where the power of the Force holds sway over decisions (good and bad) in the lives of so many, including many of those that Han himself is closest to.

Leia Organa

"There Are Things That You Cannot Solve By Jumping In An X-wing And Blowing Something Up!"

Leia Organa in Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Leia makes this assertion to Poe Dameron in The Last Jedi in response to the pilot acting recklessly and in direct opposition to her on behalf of the Resistance.

In a position of power as a princess or a general, Leia's commitment to diplomacy has remained a central tenet of her character, allowing her to oversee and engage with vast numbers and kinds of people, whether acting as a spy or coordinating Rebel evacuations.

Rose Tico

"That's How We're Gonna Win. Not Fighting What We Hate, Saving What We Love."

Rose Tico in Star Wars The Last Jedi

Rose declares this to Finn after saving him in The Last Jedi, the movie in which her character has the biggest narrative, and it's fueled by her protective instincts.

Despite conflicting opinions, Rose and Finn were one of the best duos from the sequel trilogy, with Rose seeing through Finn's moments of bravado and growing to care for him. This quote shows Rose's determination to preserve the good of the Resistance, particularly as she deals with the death of her sister.

Kylo Ren / Ben Solo

"I Feel It Again. The Pull To The Light."

Kylo Ren in Star Wars

Central to the story of the Star Wars sequel trilogy is Kylo Ren's (and Rey's) navigation of the light and dark sides of the Force, particularly as they connect him to parts of his family legacy.

Kylo speaks these words in The Force Awakens as he stands before his grandfather Darth Vader's helmet, establishing his inner sense of conflict, one that manifests itself in both his vicious temper and feelings of estrangement in regards to his purpose as a wielder of the Force.

Poe Dameron

"We Are The Spark That'll Light The Fire, That'll Burn The First Order Down."

Poe Dameron walking in Star Wars

Poe Dameron's personality in the series is ultimately a driven one, with a focus and belief in the Resistance that he pursues with single-minded attention.

This quote of his from The Last Jedi shows that same determination, as well as his belief in the knock-on effect that his own actions and the actions of other Resistance members can have when they are working towards a common goal, even if at times Poe's impulsive tendencies can get in the way.

Rey

"People Keep Telling Me They Know Me. I'm Afraid No One Does."

Daisey Ridley as Rey in Star Wars Rise of Skywalker

As the sequel trilogy character with the most screentime, there are many Rey moments that give insight into her personality, but this particular quote from The Rise Of Skywalker reflects her self-image.

Much of the story concerns itself with self-discovery, and Rey's arc over the three movies follows this pattern. From questions of her parentage to grappling with the Force, Rey is a highly introspective character, and this moment of vulnerability shows the depth of that anxiety.

Finn

"Finn. I Like That."

Finn talks to Rey in Star Wars The Force Awakens

A response to Poe giving him the nickname/new name of Finn, this quote heralds the beginning of Finn's journey towards individuality in The Force Awakens.

From being faceless in a crowd of stormtroopers to joining and becoming central to the Resistance, Finn's character is consistently thrown into new and dangerous situations, with his ability to quickly react and then adapt proving an instinctive and necessary aspect of his personality.
