In honor of Star Wars Day, Rotten Tomatoes has released a visual graph showing the critical ratings for each Skywalker Saga film in relation to one another, and the result is a bit surprising. If there’s one thing on which fans of the franchise agree, it’s that they refuse to agree on which movies are masterpieces, and which are burning trash fires (and also that The Mandalorian is pretty good). The original trilogy ranks about where you might expect on the Tomatometer, but the critical consensus on the films since will likely raise some objections.

There are few universally accepted truths in the Star Wars fandom. The first two films are widely beloved, but almost any other addition to the franchise has both staunch supporters and fierce critics. The prequel trilogy is an excellent example of this phenomenon. Once reviled as the worst that Star Wars could ever be, the prequels have seen a major rise in popularity in recent years. The sequel trilogy may find a similar renaissance down the line, but for now it remains a fiercely polarizing addition to the canon.

But what do the critics have to say? What’s the best Star Wars movie and the worst, according to professional reviews? Thanks to a graphic released by Rotten Tomatoes in honor of May the fourth, the answers are easy to see. According to the aggregator, The Empire Strikes Back holds the number one spot with an impressive 94 percent fresh rating. Then comes The Force Awakens at 93, the original Star Wars at 92, and, undoubtedly shockingly to some, The Last Jedi at 90 percent. Only The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker qualify as “rotten” by the site’s standards, with Episode IX barely scraping out a loss and landing at last place.

Obviously, critical averages don’t always reflect popular appeal, but it is interesting to see the discrepancies. Attack of the Clones is seen by many as the worst Star Wars film of all, yet it sits at a relatively positive 65 percent fresh. Likewise, The Last Jedi is easily the most controversial film in the Skywalker Saga, but among critics, it’s been celebrated. Some of the scores match up more accurately with popular opinion though, like Empire taking the top spot, and Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi being put on common ground.

Disagreements are inevitable in a franchise as massive as Star Wars, but they don’t have to be seen as a bad thing. It’s part of the series’ enduring appeal that there are many ways and reasons to enjoy its universe, and that’s reflected in the Rotten Tomatoes graph. At the end of the day, everybody has their own favorite Star Wars movie, and every Star Wars movie is somebody’s favorite.
