Summary

  • The Star Wars Rogue Squadron, directed by Patty Jenkins, was apparently canceled despite much anticipation by fans.
  • Lucasfilm has hints at the possibility Rogue Squadron could become a TV show instead of a movie.
  • Patty Jenkins has returned to working on the Rogue Squadron script after a delay caused by other projects.

There have been several Star Wars movies in development since the Skywalker Saga concluded, and one of the most intriguing is the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is attached to the project, which would focus on a squad of X-wing pilots and be the next Star Wars movie to hit theaters following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, the project faced a number of setbacks, and wasn't announced among upcoming Star Wars movies at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

Though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended the Star Wars sequel trilogy on a rather divisive note, it was all but guaranteed there would be new Star Wars movies to come. It initially seemed as though Rogue Squadron would lead the franchise's box office return, with the movie given a release date of December 22, 2023. That didn't actually happen, unfortunately.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Is Officially Canceled

Lucasfilm officially announced Star Wars: Rogue Squadron back in December 2020 with a stirring trailer for the project presented by director Patty Jenkins herself. Sadly, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron never progressed beyond that, with reports it had been canceled ahead of Star Wars Celebration 2023. There, Lucasfilm officially announced the next wave of Star Wars movies, and Rogue Squadron was notably absent.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has hinted the Rogue Squadron movie could become a TV show. "Rogue Squadron, that definitely is something that we still talk about," she confirmed. "Whether it's a movie or whether it ends up being in the series space, that's definitely something." Lucasfilm has turned several other proposed movies into TV shows - Obi-Wan Kenobi being a good example - so the same may happen here.

Patty Jenkins Is Back To Working On A Script For Rogue Squadron

In the latest twist, Patty Jenkins revealed she's working on a Rogue Squadron script again. According to Jenkins, the movie was put on the backburner because of her focus on Wonder Woman 3; with that now canceled after a major shakeup at Warner Bros., Jenkins is free to begin work on Rogue Squadron again. In her view, she "owes" Star Wars a script.

Lucasfilm recently confirmed its future slate, announcing an upcoming movie titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. The press release officially confirmed other projects are in development, though, and it's possible Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is still one of them. That fits, suggesting the project is still in development in some form, although clearly it would be early on in pre-production.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Story Details

Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron

Though there aren't many story details for the Rogue Squadron movie that Patty Jenkins planned on making, the title does tell fans a lot about what they might have expected. Rogue Squadron is a team of the 12 best X-wing pilots in the Rebel Alliance who are led by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles to do battle with the Galactic Empire. Jenkins had said she wanted to make the best fighter pilot movie of all time (via DenOfGeek). Beyond that, though, the canceled Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie is a mystery.
