Director Patty Jenkins confirms Star Wars: Rogue Squadron already has a writer who might be announced soon. When Disney first began producing Star Wars movies, the studio had a rapid output, with one film coming out every year from 2015 to 2019. Fans' opinions on these various films diminished as the years went on, and following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm and Disney opted to take a break from the big screen. Now a slew of streaming shows are heading to Disney+ over the next few years, though that doesn't mean the film side of Star Wars is completely over.

Last week's Disney Investor Day brought numerous updates about Star Wars' upcoming Disney+ shows, but it also contained a major bit of movie news. Patty Jenkins, the mastermind behind the DCEU's Wonder Woman movies, will direct the next Star Wars movie, an original story centered on aspiring starfighter pilots titled Rogue Squadron. As the first woman to helm a Star Wars flick, the news of Jenkins' involvement was met with much excitement from fans. Currently, Rogue Squadron is slated for release on December 23, 2023.

With a release date in place, it would make sense for Rogue Squadron to already be a ways into the development process. Indeed, Jenkins confirmed in an interview with Collider that Rogue Squadron already has a writer, though she would not say who. "I want him to have his own proper announcement, so I'm going to wait until that comes out," Jenkins said. One thing she did do, though, was give an update about where they are in the writing process, saying:

"We're very far into the — we're finishing the treatment basically, which is pretty big. So it ends up being like where you're fairly close to a well-along screenplay by the time I'm done with the treatment in my process. So yeah, we've been working on it for awhile. It's going great. I'm super excited about it. I'm super excited about the story."

Star Wars Rogue Squadron

Clearly, Jenkins has been working on Rogue Squadron for some time alongside this mystery writer, which comes as no surprise seeing as Lucasfilm has plans to release it in three years' time. During the official announcement, Jenkins shared Rogue Squadron has very personal ties for her, as she was inspired by her father's career as a fighter pilot. Therefore, it makes sense for her to be quite eager about getting to work on this new movie.

Fans are no doubt curious to hear who will be crafting the script for Rogue Squadron, but it sounds like it might take a little while before the official announcement comes. Per Jenkins' update, the script itself is more of a treatment at this stage, but one that's certainly far along. It's hard to say exactly when Lucasfilm will choose to unveil this mysterious screenwriter; it could be within the next week, or it could be a month from now. Even without their name, though, fans can rest assured someone is working on Rogue Squadron with Jenkins to ensure it meets that 2023 release date.
