The latest news regarding Rogue Squadron and Lando suggest that Disney is still pushing forward with their original Star Wars spinoff plan, but with a focus on streaming shows over yearly film releases. This is likely due to the success of The Mandalorian compared to the relative poor performance of the last few Star Wars cinematic offerings.

Disney Investor Day 2020 saw the announcement of several new Star Wars series and the next Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron. The film, which is being directed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, is not scheduled for release until December 2023. This wait that would have been unthinkable several years ago, when Disney was planning to release a new Star Wars movie every year. These plans were changed after a number of creative setbacks and the underperformance of several key films financially, yet it seems the success of The Mandalorian has pushed Disney to shift the focus of the Star Wars franchise from feature-length films to spinoff streaming series.

Little is known about the story of Rogue Squadron at the moment. Despite the hopes of Star Wars fans that the movie might be based on the popular series of novels centered around the team of legendary fighter pilots with whom Luke Skywalker served, it has been revealed Rogue Squadron will be an original story with no connection to any earlier media. It is suspected, however, that it will serve as a spiritual sequel to Rogue One, the first Star Wars film made outside of the three trilogies making up Skywalker saga.

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in Han Solo movie

Even less is known about the upcoming Lando series, beyond the fact that it will involve Lando Calrissian, the charming scoundrel turned Rebel general. At this time it is unknown who will be playing Lando; Billy Dee Williams, who originated the role, or Donald Glover, who played him in Solo: A Star Wars Story. It's possible the series could center upon Lando after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which left Lando's story open and hinted he might be heading on a new adventure with the rogue stormtrooper Jannah. It's also possible the series could star Glover as the younger Lando and cover his early exploits, much like an earlier Lucasfilm series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. The show could conceivably do both, with the older Lando telling stories of his past played out in flashback, while also having adventures in the present, much like in other action series like Highlander and Arrow.

In any case, Lando will be continuing the story of an established character in a spinoff, as per the original plan Disney made for the Star Wars franchise. While the upcoming Rogue Squadron film may be a wholly original work, there is still a chance that Lando could draw off some of the material that was relegated to the Star Wars Legends line. It would be interesting, for instance, for the show to formally introduce some of Lando's love interests from other media, like Tendra Risant; the businesswoman from a rich political family, who eventually became Lando's wife. Overall, both shows take Disney's spinoff plan with the movies and reapplies them to Disney+, which is a much safer option given how many blockbusters Disney has to contend with at the moment.
