As the first spinoff movie in the Star Wars universe, Rogue One delivered thrills in the story of a small group of Rebels who play a pivotal role in the fight against the Empire. While it is an intense and heartbreaking story at times, it is also packed with a lot of laughs.
Amidst the space action, there are some great quotes that highlight the humor in the Star Wars universe. From the scene-stealing droid K-2SO's endless one-liners to some jokes from unexpected Star Wars characters, these funny quotes helped to make Rogue One a special Star Wars adventure.
Jyn Has Sass
Jyn: "It's Not A Problem If You Don't Look Up."
Jyn Erso makes for a compelling hero in Rogue One. After losing her parents and feeling abandoned by the Rebels, she seems to lose faith in fighting for anything. She has resigned herself to keeping her head down and looking after herself.
When asked if she is okay with seeing an Imperial flag flying over the galaxy, she suggests she won't notice if she doesn't look up. While it is a sad line that speaks to her losing her way, it is also a great smart-ass line from the rebellious character.
An Aggressive Rescue
K-2SO: "Congratulations You're Being Rescued."
From R2-D2 to BB-8, there have been many Star Wars droid characters who have stolen the show. But one of the best is K-2SO who delivers most of the funny lines in the movie. From his first appearance, the reprogrammed Imperial droid proves he has no filter.
After Jyn's prisoner ship is attacked, she tries to run away only to be grabbed and roughly thrown to the ground by K-2 who informs her that this is a rescue. It suggests the droid might not have great people skills given how unconcerned he was with throwing her around.
Easy Mistake
K-2SO: "Did You Know That Wasn’t Me?"
Right from that first violent "rescue" meeting, Jyn and K-2 have a hard time getting along. They are both very untrusting and neither of them seems overly concerned with the well-being of the other.
This leads to a hilarious fake out as Jyn finds herself in a gun battle with Imperial soldiers. She turns around and shoots down a droid only to realize too late that it looks exactly like K-2. However, K-2 then comes around the corner, sees the identical droid, and questions if Jyn knew that wasn't him.
Slight Problem
K-2SO: "Although There's A Problem On The Horizon… There's No Horizon."
The Death Star is one of the most iconic weapons in the Star Wars universe and it is great to see the earlier stages of it shown through this movie. This includes its first test which results in the destruction of the ancient city of Jedha.
But even in the midst of the destruction, K-2 maintains his unimpressed persona. While waiting in the ship, K-2 radios to the others casually describing an approaching problem which is actually a wave of destruction quickly approaching him.
Getting Into Character
K-2SO: "Quiet! And There's A Fresh One If You Mouth Off Again."
It is a fun use of K-2 as a character to have him as a reprogrammed Imperial droid whose circuits are a little off. It also helps a great deal in the heroes' mission as he can pose as one of the enemies, even if he is not the best liar.
At one point, K-2 pretends to be taking Jyn and Cassian Andor prisoner when they are confronted by a group of Stormtroopers. Cassian tries to speak up and cover for K-2's awkward lying only for K-2 to get carried away with his role and give him a slap.
A Dark Sense Of Humor
Darth Vader: "Be Careful Not To Choke On Your Aspirations, Director."
While Darth Vader has many iconic quotes in these movies, few of them could be considered funny. His role in Rogue One is not big but it makes him into a truly intimidating villain, even to the movie's main antagonist, Krennic.
When Krennic pays Vader a visit to ask for control over the Death Star program, Vader shows he has little respect for the man. He uses his Force power to choke Krennic and delivers a surprisingly cheesy one-liner that is hard not to have some fun with.
K-2's Lack Of Patience
K-2SO: "You Did. But I Thought It Was Boring And You’re In Trouble."
While a droid like C-3PO is always eager to serve his masters in any way that he can, K-2 is quite the opposite as he is constantly defying orders and talking back to Cassian. He has a hilarious sassiness to him that really adds a lot of fun to the movie.
When the heroes arrive in Jedha, Cassian tells K-2 to stay with the ship. Of course, it doesn't take him long to disobey that order and help them when they are attacked by Stormtroopers. But the fact that he simply admits that he was bored shows how little this droid cares.
Stating The Obvious
Chirrut: "Are You Kidding Me? I’m Blind!"
Perhaps the most impressive member of the Rogue One team is Chirrut Îmwe. He is a blind follower of the Jedi who is nonetheless a skilled and impressive fighter. And while he is mostly seen as a wise and stoic member of the group, he has one of the funniest lines.
After taking out a group of Stormtroopers, Chirrut and the others are taken in by Saw Gerrera's soldiers. In order to keep their base hidden, they put bags over the heads of their captives. But Chirrut points out their stupidity as he is blind.
A Reluctant Supporter
K-2SO: "I'll Be There For You. Cassian Said I Had To."
Fans are very excited for the Andor series coming to Disney+ which will see Diego Luna return to the role of Cassian Andor. He makes for a great hero in Rogue One and gives an inspirational speech as he agrees to stand with Jyn and go into battle with her.
It is a rousing speech that shows just how heroic Cassian really is. When he is done, K-2 tells Jyn he will join her as well, then adds that Cassian is making him do it which is decidedly less heroic.
Positive Thoughts Only
K-2SO: "I Have A Bad Feeling About…" Jyn: "Quiet."
As the first Star Wars movie outside the main trilogies, it is interesting to see the different ways in which Rogue One deals with the established Star Wars traditions. For instance, it is the first Star Wars movie to not feature an opening crawl. However, they do pay homage to the franchise's catchphrase.
Every Star Wars movie had included the line "I have a bad feeling about this" but Rogue One switches it up slightly. As they prepare for their final mission, K-2 begins to say the line before Jyn quickly shoots him down.
