The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker RealD 3D poster recreates the iconic 1977 Star Wars movie poster. George Lucas introduced moviegoers to the galaxy far, far away over 40 years ago with the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. This year, director J.J. Abrams brings Lucas' Skywalker Saga to an end with next month's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The new film will additionally conclude the story of the sequel trilogy Abrams launched with 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As such, The Rise of Skywalker follows new trio Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) as they go up against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

As revealed in the first Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker trailer, the ninth movie in the series will also bring back Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), who appeared in the prequels as Senator Palpatine before revealing himself to be Darth Vader's Sith mentor Darth Sidious. In the sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren is the grandson of Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader, being the son of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), but turned to the dark side while studying under Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Now, the story Lucas began back in 1977 will be coming to a final conclusion in The Rise of Skywalker and that sense of coming full circle is clear in the latest poster for Star Wars 9.

On Twitter, Star Wars unveiled the new Rise of Skywalker RealD 3D poster, which puts Rey, Finn and Poe front and center, with Kylo Ren's repaired helmet looming large above the heroes. Also featured on the new poster are the Knights of Ren, Resistance allies Rose Tico (Loan Kelly Marie Tran), Jannah (Naomi Ackie) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) as well as droids C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), R2-D2, BB-8 and D-O. The design of the poster is reminiscent of the Star Wars 1977 movie poster. Check out the new Rise of Skywalker poster below and a comparison to the 1977 Star Wars poster above.

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker RealD 3D Poster

Considering how protective Lucasfilm and Abrams tend to be about Star Wars spoilers, it's not surprising they're veering more into The Rise of Skywalker serving as the final chapter of the saga rather than reveal too much about the movie. Some Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailers have leaned into nostalgia rather than include new footage. While that may be disappointing to those wanting to see more of the film before it hits theaters, it's no doubt effective in hyping up Star Wars fans young and old. With this latest Star Wars poster, Lucasfilm continues to reference the past, this time by mimicking the original film's poster design.

Still, the poster continues to hide Emperor Palpatine, who, though confirmed for The Rise of Skywalker, has been largely absent from marketing aside from his voice in certain trailers and the initial teaser poster which was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration this year. Fans are eager to learn how Palpatine factors into the sequel trilogy, though fans can presume he'll be a key aspect of tying up the entire Skywalker Saga. For now, viewers will just have to wait and see how Abrams' next chapter in Lucasfilm's franchise answers all their questions. Thankfully, there's only three weeks left until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters and fans can see it for themselves.
