A new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer shows the Jedi voices Rey heard during her final battle against Palpatine. In the film's third act, it appears the Emperor has gained the upper hand over the young scavenger-turned-Jedi, but Rey then calls upon all of the Knights that came before her and summons the power of the Force to turn the tide against her grandfather. For fans, it was an awe-inspiring moment that served as payoff for Rey's introduction in The Rise of Skywalker (when she failed to reach the old Jedi during her training) and paid homage to the complete Skywalker saga.

Not only did the sequence feature the voices of Jedi from past Star Wars movies, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jinn, J.J. Abrams and company integrated characters from the animated TV shows (Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus), which was a thrill for viewers well-versed in all corners of franchise canon. Arguably, the only thing that would have been better would be if audiences got to see the spirits of these Jedi come to Rey's aid, rather than just hear them speak. Now, thanks to the latest bit of Rise of Skywalker marketing, that's happening (from a certain point of view).

In a short promo for The Rise of Skywalker's home media release, footage from earlier Star Wars films (primarily the prequels) plays over the Rise of Skywalker audio, pairing each Jedi up with their lines. The video, which you can watch below, depicts Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luminara Unduli, Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Yoda, and Luke Skywalker. Since this trailer is for a movie, Jedi who only appeared on TV shows aren't included.

Since The Rise of Skywalker marked the definitive end of the Skywalker saga, a goal of the creative team was to honor the complete story and acknowledge all three eras in the narrative. Incorporating the old Jedi voices was one of the most obvious ways Abrams and crew went about doing this, but there's also plenty of ships from Star Wars history present in the Resistance fleet in the Battle of Exegol, an old battle droid model in the corner of Babu Frik's workshop, and a plethora of other fun Easter eggs and references. It was nice to see The Rise of Skywalker embrace all of its predecessors. At one point in the Disney era, the new movies seemed hesitant to fully acknowledge the maligned prequels, but Rise of Skywalker made sure that trilogy's contributions to the story were not forgotten.

Though Rey's journey in the films is complete, it will be interesting to see if she goes on more adventures in other areas of canon. Lucasfilm's publishing division is currently pushing the High Republic initiative (set 200 years before The Phantom Menace), but there's always a chance another novel or comic series explores Rey's life after the sequel trilogy as she looks to rebuild the Jedi Order. While it would be smart for Lucasfilm to broaden their horizons when it comes to the movies and introduce audiences to new characters, it'd be a wasted opportunity if Rey wasn't the subject of some books down the line. She was an instant fan-favorite, so there'd probably be a lot of interest in learning what she got up to following The Rise of Skywalker.
