The world has seen Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but now the film is getting its own comic adaptation. Marvel Comics announced the new series Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation as a five-issue run that will further explore the film's plot threads, and include extended and deleted scenes that weren't shown in the movie.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in December of last year as the final chapter of the Skywalker saga. The J.J. Abrams-directed film featured Rey, Poe, Finn and the rest of the Resistance taking on Kylo Ren (previously Ben Solo) and the villainous First Order -- soon giving way to the surprise return of Emperor Palpatine, who along with his rising 'Final Order' acted as primary antagonist of the film. The closing chapter of the new trilogy grossed more than a billion dollars, but received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Which means the promise of new and extended details is going to garner plenty of attention.

The new comic series will be written by Jody Houser (Star Wars: Rogue One Adaptation) and will feature art from Will Sliney (Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren). While the comic book will tell the same story an the movie it's based on, the previous Last Jedi comic shows how much can change with the medium. Marvel is already confirming the comic version will feature "deleted scenes," with Houser commenting directly on the extra content:

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, it was an honor to be asked to be a part of wrapping up the Skywalker saga with Marvel Comics. We have some fun plans to add scenes and material that weren’t seen in the movie.

What this untold story will amount to is anyone's guess, but given that one of the main criticisms of the film was rushing through key plot points, so the comic might be able to answer some of the biggest Rise of Skywalker questions fans had after seeing the movie. Regardless, it's exciting to see The Rise of Skywalker get a comic adaptation, for those readers looking to experience the movie. New scenes are a bonus!
