Babu Frik's tech in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was inspired by the Nintendo Gameboy. The Rise of Skywalker was released last December and brought Disney's first Star Wars trilogy to a close. The reception to the film was decidedly mixed, notching one of the lowest Rotten Tomatoes critics scores of any Star Wars film (51%). In general, Disney's Star Wars films have been rather polarizing among fans, and The Rise of Skywalker stirred up some passionate conversations about the movie's fan service and the way it ended certain characters' arcs (like the Rey Skywalker scene and Kylo Ren's death).

However, one element of The Rise of Skywalker proved to be generally well-received by all audiences: The tiny Anzelian technician Babu Frik. Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) seek out Babu's help on the planet Kijimi when they need to access valuable information in C-3PO's (Anthony Daniels) head. Babu played a small role in The Rise of Skywalker, but he still somehow managed to inspire a dramatic and tragic backstory and gained the affections of fans everywhere.

Since The Rise of Skywalker's release, fans have glimpsed some of Babu Frik's early (horrific) designs, but now they can get a closer look at how his technology came to life. Concept artist Matthew Savage shared the designs for Babu's workshop, and as he said, some of the tech there was "possibly inspired by a Nintendo Gameboy... possibly..." You can see it for yourself in the space below.

Star Wars has a knack for getting fans attached to adorable little side characters (see: BB-8), but Babu Frik was something of a surprise. After all, early drafts of The Rise of Skywalker killed Babu when the First Order blew up Kijimi. Luckily, though, director J.J. Abrams changed course and let the little guy live. While it's unlikely that Babu will return in a future Star Wars project, anything could happen in this franchise, as evidenced by the fact that Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) made his big comeback in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Star Wars franchise is at an interesting turning point right now. With the Skywalker saga having been completed with The Rise of Skywalker, Disney is deciding where to take the franchise next. It's unclear exactly when the next Star Wars film will be released, but it will be directed by Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi, and he will write the script alongside Krysty Wilson-Carins (1917). Additionally, the franchise will continue to expand on Disney+ with live-action shows focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). A big question lingers, though: Who will be the next Babu Frik?
