The recently released one-shot Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular takes the space opera in a new direction: baking! Two Jedi go head-to-head in a baking challenge that requires them to share stories, which delve into the history of the High Republic era of Star Wars. Will these heroes master the art of creating Yoda's pastries?
This Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular is an off-shoot of the ongoing title Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures published by IDW Publishing, which is regularly written by Daniel José Older (Star Wars: Last Shot). Taking place during the High Republic era that is set 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, the Adventures series focuses on the journeys of young Padawans under the tutelage of Yoda as they learn powerful lessons like how to harness their fear rather than reject it.
The webzine Comic Crusaders released a preview of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular, including the credits page, five interior pages, and the cover by Jason Loo. The solicit information details that the issue will feature the characters of Torban "Buckets of Blood" Buck and Kantam Sy going up against each other—not in a physical fight, but in a bake-off to make Master Yoda's special pastry recipe. The description even promises that the recipe for these pastries is included at the back of the comic. Apparently, it requires an epic story in order to create the pastries, so Buckets of Blood and Kantam tell tales of battles in their lives while creating this treat. The reward for the winner: Padawan approval. The preview below gives readers a look at the Kitchen Area in the Jedi Quarters of the Starlight Beacon as well as a look back at "The Great Disaster."
Great things (sometimes) come in twos as the creative team includes two writers, Older (Star Wars: The High Republic: Trail of Shadows) and Vita Ayala (New Mutants); two artists, Toni Bruno (Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures) and Jo Cheol-Hong (credited as Jo Geyong on the credits page); and two colorists, Cheol-Hong and Rebecca Nalty (Vampirella/Red Sonja). The creative team also includes letters by Jake M. Wood (Transformers). It's pretty entertaining from the preview alone that the creative team has delved into such an oddball adventure with these characters, with great moments like "Buckets of Blood" announcing his title as he enthusiastically talks about the joys of baking. As long as he doesn't get blood in the pastries, this should be a pretty safe adventure.
Who will win the baking challenge, "Buckets of Blood" Buck or Kantam Sy? Will there be any baking disasters that could rival the likes of The Great British Baking Show?
