Warning! Spoilers ahead for Doctor Aphra #22

The latest issue of Doctor Aphra sees Star Wars teasing the return of R2-D2 and C-3PO's evil twins. Having been taken over by a dark supernatural force rivaling the power of the Sith, the mind of rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra is an open book to the sentient force known as the Spark Eternal. As such, this exciting new issue reveals that Aphra's less-than-loyal (but extremely lethal) droids BT-1 and 0-0-0 will be making a new appearance.

First appearing in Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader (2015), BT-1 and 0-0-0 were introduced as a similar droid duo akin to their more classic counterparts R2-D2 and C-3PO. Intimidating and extremely dangerous, Bee Tee is a homicidal blastomech droid armed with an extensive arsenal of weapons to annihilate his targets. Meanwhile, Triple Zero is a protocol droid proficient not only in several forms of translation but also in multiple methods of torture. While they were activated to initially serve Darth Vader himself, the two droids would join Doctor Aphra in her adventures after she faked her own death to escape her own servitude to the Dark Lord of the Sith. However, the droids have been noticeably absent in Aphra's current comics series taking place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

However, the new Doctor Aphra #22 from Alyssa Wong, Minkyu Jung, and Natacha Bustos teases Bee Tee and Triple Zero's return to the Star Wars galaxy. Currently, Doctor Aphra is possessed by the Spark Eternal, an ancient yet groundbreaking sentient technology built by the Ascendant, a sect of dark side worshippers who rivaled the Sith. Seeing Aphra's mind as a gold mine, the Spark Eternal intends to recover every piece of dangerous tech Aphra's ever encountered to incorporate them into itself (making it unstoppable). However, it seems as though the secrets of Aphra's most dangerous discoveries lie with Bee Tee and Triple Zero.

Star Wars Teases Beetee and Triple Zero Return

Apparently, it seems as though Aphra's droids have been on a mission of their own. According to Aphra, they're also safeguarding secrets that could be devastating if the Spark were to get its hands on them. Seeing as how this issue didn't specifically reveal where the sinister droids are and what they're protecting, it's likely that a reunion between Aphra and her psychotic droids will be coming soon once the Spark Eternal tracks them down.

Even though will be against her will, the idea of Doctor Aphra re-teaming with her droids is an exciting prospect for future issues. The dynamics between the rogue archaeologist and the homicidal versions of R2-D2 and C-3PO have always been extremely entertaining. Furthermore, they're likely the best chance Aphra has at getting free from the dark technology she discovered in this new Star Wars comic.
