The second season of Star Wars Resistance is set during the events of The Last Jedi. Star Wars has had an animated presence on television for many years. Star Wars: The Clone Wars covered the prequel era, while Star Wars: Rebels covered a time right before the original trilogy took place. When Star Wars: Resistance debuted, it was the first animated series to cover the sequel era with the first season taking place during the events of The Force Awakens.

Resistance featured sequel era characters like Poe Dameron, BB-8, and General Leia. Oscar Isaac even reprised his role for the show. Poe was just a supporting character in this story, but BB-8 was featured more prominently. Resistance doesn’t look like any of the previous animated Star Wars shows. It has more of an anime-inspired style, which set it apart from its predecessors.

Star Wars is getting more television shows on Disney+, including a new season of The Clone Wars and a live action show called The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau. Resistance is now the only Star Wars show not airing on Disney+. Lucasfilm announced in a press release that the second (and final) season of Star Wars: Resistance would take place during the events of The Last Jedi.

“The new season takes place during the events of “The Last Jedi” leading up to “The Rise Of Skywalker,” as Kaz and the team continue to fight against the threat of the First Order, culminating in an epic series finale.”

Star Wars Resistance Kylo Ren

The main cast from the first season is returning, but there is also new cast members such as Joe Manganiello (who was briefly seen as Deathstroke at the end of Justice League) and Xena Warrior Princess herself, Lucy Lawless. The character of Kylo Ren is also set to appear, voiced by Matthew Wood, who has done several voices for the franchise including General Grevious in The Clone Wars.

On the one hand, it is a bit surprising that Resistance is ending after only 2 seasons. If the first one was set during the events of The Force Awakens, and the second during The Last Jedi, it would make sense for a third season to be set during The Rise Of Skywalker. On the other hand, with the introduction of Disney+, it makes sense that a lot of their focus would be developing new content for that. Besides, the story that Star Wars Resistance is telling could come to a natural end after two seasons. Having a short lived, well told story is better than a series overstaying their welcome just because it can. It is always better to leave people wanting more, than people not caring that it is still on.
