The midseason trailer for Star Wars Resistance arrives just as Disney Channel renews the series for a second season. The animated series takes place shortly before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and follows a young pilot by the name of Kazuda Xiono (voiced by Christopher Sean), who works for the Resistance as a spy. Xiono's mission sees him on the Colossus station reporting any First Order intel back to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and the Resistance.

Star Wars Resistance is the third animated show to come from Lucasfilm and debuted on Disney Channel last fall. Resistance is set to return with new episodes this weekend for the final run of the debut season. The first eleven episodes of the premiere season have shown Kaz and his band of pilots slowly learning more about the First Order's ties to the base they call home. It has all been building towards the final episodes of the season, as seen in the new trailer, along with a confirmation they won't be the last.

Disney Channel has announced that Star Wars Resistance season 2 is officially in development. The second season will debut in the fall of 2019, but no exact premiere date has been set. Additionally, Star Wars debuted the midseason trailer for Star Wars Resistance today, showcasing footage of how the series will look as it sets up the events of the next season. Resistance returns with a brand new episode on Sunday January 13 at 10 pm EST on Disney Channel, but the trailer consists of scenes from several upcoming episodes.

Sticking with the trailer, arguably the biggest moment of the footage is seeing and hearing General Hux's Starkiller Base speech from The Force Awakens. It has been known that Resistance would tell a story close to the time of events from J.J. Abrams' film, but this confirms that at some point in the final episodes of season one, Resistance's events will actually be happening at the same time as the film. Although not confirmed, this could lead to even more crossover between the series and the movies before season 1 ends, and certainly in season 2 episodes. After all, Star Wars: The Last Jedi takes place only a few days after The Force Awakens, so maybe Kaz will join the fight in a larger way.

These connections will surely continue in season two, but one major question could be what movie Resistance is tied to. It could easily explore the time between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and even slightly after the latter. But, the fall 2019 premiere guarantees new episodes of Resistance will be airing mere weeks before Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters in December. There is reportedly a one year time jump between The Last Jedi and Episode IX, so any connections to the upcoming release may be minor in season two, with larger crossovers being saved for a potential third season. Either way, Star Wars Resistance is set to return in just a few days and will continue with season two later this year.
