Star Wars seemingly adds old Wedge Antilles to the cover of the upcoming novel Resistance Reborn. The book, which will be published in November, is part of the "Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" line looking to capitalize on the hype and anticipation for this December's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It fills in the gaps between The Last Jedi and Star Wars 9, depicting Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron's first mission together as they work with General Leia to rebuild the Resistance following the Battle of Crait.

With that synopsis, there was already a great deal of interest in the novel. While Resistance Reborn likely won't be required reading to understand or enjoy The Rise of Skywalker, the various Star Wars tie-in books are valuable complements to the films and can cover material the movies simply don't have time for. Since Resistance Reborn features multiple main sequel trilogy characters in prominent roles, fans were eager to see what the future held for Rey, Finn, and Poe. But now, there's a whole other reason to be excited for Resistance Reborn: the apparent return of Wedge Antilles.

On Twitter, Spanish publisher Planeta Cómic shared a post containing an updated version of the Resistance Reborn cover art. Standing behind Finn is someone who looks to be an aged Wedge Antilles. Check out the post in the space below:

Wedge, of course, was a fan-favorite side character in the original trilogy. Other than Luke Skywalker, he was the only Rebel pilot to appear in all three films and he had a hand in destroying the second Death Star. Wedge showed up in other areas of canon, including episodes of Star Wars Rebels and the Aftermath series of books (which is set after Return of the Jedi). If this is indeed Wedge in Resistance Reborn (and that does closely resemble Denis Lawson on the cover), then it will be the latest in the Star Wars timeline he's appeared. It would confirm the veteran pilot was alive during the events of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, obviously embarking on adventures offscreen. As for how Wedge fits into the Resistance Reborn narrative, that remains to be seen.

The next question, logically, is if Star Wars 9 director J.J. Abrams somehow convinced actor Denis Lawson to reprise the role in the new movie. Lawson was asked to return in The Force Awakens, but he said doing so "just would have bored me." It's possible he had a change of heart in the years since and decided it would be fun to go back to the galaxy far, far away one last time. Viewers likely won't know about Lawson's involvement (or lack thereof) in The Rise of Skywalker until December, however. If Wedge is returning in the films, that's a surprise Lucasfilm would want to save for the premiere, similar to Red Leader and Gold Leader in Rogue One.
