SPOILERS for those not caught up on Star Wars Rebels ahead!

-

As far as Star Wars Rebels is concerned, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story couldn't have released at a better time. All season long, Rebels has been building towards something bigger, towards a unified coalition - the Rebel Alliance. By the time of Rogue One, that alliance is becoming stronger, earning victories, but during Star Wars Rebels it's still forming, only just beginning to gather allies from across the galaxy to revolt against the Empire en masse. In part, we know how the Rebellion wins, but now we're learning just how hard fought a win it was.

And Star Wars Rebels season 3 has quite a bit to show us, having left many mysteries for its back half to explore. When the series returns this weekend, the Ghost crew will be joined by Saw Gerrera as they investigate rumors the Empire is building a massive weapon on the planet, Geonosis. Chances are they won't fully reveal it as the Death Star (that comes later in Rogue One), but we'll understand the magnitude of whatever they uncover. The same can be said of Sabine receiving the Darksaber in Rebels' midseason finale - she may not fully comprehend its significance like we do, but she sure will when she returns with it to Mandalore. And finally, the showdown Rebels has been teasing ever since Maul and Ezra first had their holocron visions. "Twin suns", "desert planet where it all began", "Him!" - it's all led to this, Obi-Wan Kenobi's return from exile.

On that note: you can watch the new trailer for the second half of Star Wars Rebels season 3, above!

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Ghost Crew

Bringing back Obi-Wan Kenobi is going to have huge ramifications for Star Wars Rebels. Most immediately, there's the implication that Obi-Wan will be confronted by Maul - and seeing as we know Obi-Wan survives until Episode IV: A New Hope, what happens to Maul? Will Tatooine also be the planet where it all ends for Maul? There's also the question of what happens, presumably, when Ezra and Kanan catch up with the old Jedi Master? It's doubtful Obi-Wan will leave Tatooine or take on an active role in the rebellion, his mission protecting Luke is far too important. And speaking of, will Rebels go so far as to introduce Luke? We've already met a young Princess Leia, why not expect at least a scene between Ezra and an unsuspecting farmboy on his way to Tosche's Station?

Along with finally unveiling an older, wiser Obi-Wan Kenobi (complete with an older-sounding voice), this Star Wars Rebels season 3 trailer is chock-full of action. Grand Admiral Thrawn is still a very large threat to this burgeoning rebellion, and as we see throughout this trailer, he's getting very close to finding the weakness needed to pull it all apart. Agent Kallus, who was just recently revealed to be the Rebellion's latest Fulcrum spy, better watch out.
