The animated TV show Star Wars Rebels comes to end, with the series finale trailer finding Ezra Bridger meeting his destiny. Before Star Wars: The Force AwakensRogue One, and The Last Jedi, Disney XD's Star Wars Rebels not only served a bridge between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope but wound up exploring the Star Wars universe - and the ways of the Force - in new and fascinating ways.

Rebels is finally at the end of its run, with its penultimate episodes taking the show's young protagonist Ezra Bridger through a collection of key moments from throughout the franchise. This caps a final season that has included some unexpected twists and surprises, from Kanan’s shocking death to Ahsoka's return. Season 4 has added a dimension to the Force that forever alters everything we know about the Star Wars canon, opening up an intriguing avenue for philosophical debate - quite an achievement for what is essentially a brightly-colored kids' show.

Star Wars Rebels is clearly much more than that, however, and the final episode's trailer teases a final, epic showdown between the forces of good and evil. The voice of Grand Admiral Thrawn says, presumably to Ezra, "You chose to be a Jedi. But for all those abilities, all the power, the Jedi lack a vision for how to wield it." A series of images follows, with Ezra diving into battle, his lightsaber blazing. "Everything I have done, and will do, began with you," Ezra says... but to who? There are any number of possibilities, from a Force-ghost Kanan to his friends and crewmates Hera, Zeb, Sabine, Chopper and even Captain Rex, all of whom are glimpsed in the trailer.

We can expect the crew of the Ghost to likely meet their decisive fate, and it appears that the odds are stacked against them. Admiral Thrawn is seen ordering unseen forces to open fire, and we even hear the voice of the Emperor/Darth Sidious, uttering one of his favorite lines: "Destroy him!" We are left with the distinct impression that someone will making a significant sacrifice during this final episode, and are likely meant to believe it will be Ezra.

With so much in store for the Star Wars franchise in the coming decade or so - Solo: A Star Wars Story, the trilogy-capper Star Wars: Episode IX, a series of films from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss - tying off Rebels was inevitable. While a new TV series might be on the way, so much of the audience goodwill toward the new run of films is thanks to Rebels, which reminded audiences what they loved about the franchise's universe: flawed, daring heroes, a wide-eyed sense of adventure, and a conviction that despite our stumbles, doing the right thing is worth it in the end.
