Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Promo: Rebels vs. Thrawn

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Thrawn Hera

In less than two weeks (as of this writing), the third season of Star Wars Rebels will premiere on Disney XD, and fans are eager to see what happens next in the show. Last year's finale, "Twilight of the Apprentice," was very well-received, and the announcement that fan-favorite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn will officially be made canon in Rebels only got more people excited. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may still be a few months away, but new content from a galaxy far, far away is right around the corner.

Disney XD is keeping the hype train rolling with their marketing campaign, recently releasing a new clip from the first episode that hinted at protagonist Ezra Bridger flirting with the Dark Side of the Force. Now, a new promo for the season has made its way online (watch it above), one that suggests the crew of the Ghost will have their hands full as they fight to liberate the galaxy from the clutch of the Empire.

Though it runs only 30 seconds, the spot packs a lot of intriguing details to tease viewers. In addition to the overarching conflict with Thrawn, it would appear that a key element of the season will be the continuing growth of the Rebellion. Hera is keen on the idea of stealing fighter ships, such as the famous Y-wings, in order to build a strike force for the Alliance. As one would expect, acquiring them won't come easy, and the Rebels will have to deal with several foes. In addition to Thrawn threatening to tear them apart "piece by piece," destroyer droids factor into the equation, as well as the typical stormtroopers.

Perhaps the most fascinating shots are of the various Force users. Both Darth Maul and Kanan appear to be possessed; their eyes are glowing green, and Kanan is shown engaged in a lightsaber duel with a confused Ezra. It's unknown what causes this, but as Rebels further explores the mythology of the Force, there are sure to be several revelations that come to light. Per the character descriptions, Maul is on the loose traveling the galaxy and "knows where a few secrets are buried." In his pursuit of vengeance, maybe he uncovered something truly damaging.

Of course, Thrawn continues to be a lynchpin in the advertising efforts, and that shouldn't surprise anyone. His role in Rebels was the biggest announcement to come out of this year's Star Wars Celebration, and longtime fans of the old Expanded Universe (now Legends) cannot wait to see how he is translated on-screen. Based on what's been shown so far, Dave Filoni and his team have brought the acclaimed writings of Timothy Zahn to life, and even if the Disney canon Thrawn isn't an exact replication of the previously published materials, the spirit of the character is right there for everyone to take in.

Rebels has become an integral part of the Star Wars franchise, fleshing out the universe and complementing the original trilogy by detailing the beginnings of the Galactic Civil War and the origins of the Rebel Alliance. The hope is that the third season can build on all the great things showcased in season two, continuing its brand of compelling storytelling and strong character development. The pieces are in place for an electrifying collection of episodes that cover all corners of the narrative.
