Star Wars Rebels Preview Clip Brings Back the Mandalorians

Star Wars Rebels teases Sabine Wren's Mandalorian past with names that should be familiar to fans of The Clone Wars animated series.

Sabine Wren and Pre Vizsla Mandalorians

Star Wars Rebels continues to be one of the most significant additions to the Star Wars saga outside of new films like The Force Awakens. It tells a story that takes place just a handful of years before the original trilogy which started with Star Wars: A New Hope. It follows a small band of Rebels as they fight the tyrannical Empire and begin to forge alliances with other Rebels, forming the basis of the Rebel Alliance that we see in A New Hope.

One of these Rebels is a Mandalorian named Sabine Wren. For those who don't know Mandalorians are those armored individuals with the T-shaped visors. The most famous character wearing Mandalorian armor is Boba Fett, the bounty hunter who took Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt. We learned more about the Mandalorians in The Clone Wars, but it looks like we're going to continue to learn more with Sabine.

The official Star Wars YouTube has released a clip from the upcoming episode "The Protector of Concord Dawn" which airs next Wednesday (Jan. 27) on Disney XD. The clip gives us a few interesting insights into the Mandalorians, specifically the family that Sabine comes from. We knew from an earlier trailer that Sabine was "house Wren, clan Vizsla" but this clip adds a bit more context to the fact. You can watch it above.

"Clan Vizsla" and "Deathwatch" should ring a bell for fans of The Clone Wars. Pre Vizsla was a Mandalorian who went against his own government by leading a terrorist group: Deathwatch. He was eventually manipulated and killed by Darth Maul (yes that Darth Maul), but it would seem his family lived on. We never knew if Pre Vizsla had a family, but it's certainly possible. Sabine mentions her mother in the clip. Perhaps Pre Vizsla was the father?

This will be the first time that we've dived into Sabine's backstory. In season 1, she was the character with perhaps the least amount of backstory informing her character. And if the new mid-season trailer is any indication, her backstory will not be the only one that expands in the remaining season.

Star Wars fans should definitely check out Star Wars Rebels, as the show continues to advance the story of the galaxy far, far away with bold storytelling that matters. The recent trailer teased the showdown between Darth Vader and his former apprentice Ahsoka Tano, but it also teased a few The Force Awakens connections. The show has also brought in a few fan-favorite characters from the films, such as Princess Leia who appeared in the most recent episode. And as we get closer to the upcoming spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a film that takes place in the same erawe can probably expect more exciting things from Star Wars Rebels.

Star Wars Rebels continues with "The Protector of Concord Dawn" on Wednesday, January 27th on Disney XD.
