Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi has a limited role in Star Wars Rebels, there are many episodes of the animated series that are worth watching before the Kenobi series premieres. Rebels not only offers insight into Obi-Wan's character, but also offers more insight into the Inquisitors and Darth Vader, who have been teased as the antagonists of the Kenobi series.

Rebels introduced the Inquisitors into Star Wars canon, including the Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother, who were featured in the Kenobi teaser trailer. Despite Rebels taking place several years after Kenobi in the timeline, there is still a lot of about Obi-Wan, the Inquisitors, Darth Vader, and the state of the galaxy during this time that can be gleaned from certain Rebels episodes, and there are elements that may even tease what is to come in Kenobi.

"Spark of Rebellion"

Vader Commands the Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels

The pilot episode "Spark of Rebellion" opens by presenting the clear hierarchy between the Inquisitors and Darth Vader. The Grand Inquisitor kneels before a hologram of Darth Vader and obeys Vader's commands that come from the Emperor himself. The end of the two-part pilot episode shows Agent Kallus reporting to the Grand Inquisitor about a member of a rebel cell--Kanan Jarrus--using a lightsaber. This shows one of the key ways that Inquisitors are able to gather intelligence to hunt down surviving Jedi and Force-sensitive individuals.

Following up on information given by a lower-level member of the Empire or even an ordinary citizen may be the key to the Inquisitors getting closer to Obi-Wan in the Kenobi series. "Spark of Rebellion" also features an old hologram of Obi-Wan warning surviving Jedi away from the Jedi Temple after Order 66. It is an ominous but vital message that he somehow manages to imbue with hope and faith, capturing a tone that will likely be similar to Obi-Wan's difficult yet inspiring journey in Kenobi.

"Rise of the Old Masters"

Luminara Unduli in Star Wars Rebels

"Rise of the Old Masters" proves that the Grand Inquisitor is a cunning and manipulative foe. He plants a false story of Jedi Master Luminara Unduli being imprisoned by the Empire to lure Jedi to him. In truth, Luminara Unduli has been dead for years, her remains in his possession.

This deception works on Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus, as they believe they will be rescuing Luminara and that she will teach Ezra, only to discover the Grand Inquisitor's ruse and narrowly survive their confrontation with him. It is unlikely that the Grand Inquisitor will use the same exact trick in Kenobi, but his words in the teaser trailer hint that he will use similarly manipulative tactics to draw Obi-Wan out by tempting the Jedi's sense of compassion.

"Call to Action"

Kanan Jarrus and the Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels Call To Action

In this episode, two incompetent Imperial officials are executed by the Grand Inquisitor. He carries out the execution on the orders of Grand Moff Tarkin and hands Jedi Kanan Jarrus over to Tarkin after capturing him.

These actions prove that in the Imperial hierarchy, the Grand Inquisitor answers to more than just Darth Vader and the Emperor. It also proves that his ruthlessness has no bounds, even when it comes to those fighting on the same side as him.

"Fire Across the Galaxy"

The Grand Inquisitor falls to his death delibrately to avoid Vader's wrath after losing his lightsaber battle with Kanan Jarrus

"Fire Across the Galaxy" brings about the death of the Grand Inquisitor. Before choosing to fall to his death, the Grand Inquisitor says one of the best quotes of Rebels: "There are some things far more frightening than death." The Grand Inquisitor would rather die than face the wrath of Darth Vader for his failure.

The Grand Inquisitor's fear of Vader speaks volumes. The Grand Inquisitor can't fail too spectacularly in Kenobi because he is still in good standing with Vader by the time of Rebels. Perhaps this fear will be founded in how Vader punishes the Third Sister/Inquisitor Reva for failing to capture or kill Obi-Wan.

"The Siege of Lothal"

Darth Vader at a distance with his red lightsaber ignited in Star Wars Rebels

In Kenobi, Darth Vader will still be fully consumed by the dark side, still many years away from being brought back to the light by his son. "Siege of Lothal" shows Vader at his villainous peak. He uses Lothal's Prime Minister Maketh Tua as bait to draw out the rebels and has her murdered.

Vader then allows the rebels to escape him, just so he can follow them and single-handedly destroy most of their fleet. This is the cunning and cutthroat version of Vader that Obi-Wan will have to face and reckon with in Kenobi.

"Always Two There Are"

Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother Inquisitors in Star Wars Rebels.

"Always Two There Are" marks the first time that the Ghost crew faces the Inquisitors known as the Fifth Brother and the Seventh Sister. While the Grand Inquisitor was a major villain and a force to be reckoned with on his own, facing numerous Inquisitors working together proves to be a perilous challenge in its own right.

With multiple Inquisitors confirmed for Kenobi--including the Fifth Brother--this is a challenge that Obi-Wan will have to confront as well. If Obi-Wan is to stand a chance against them, he will need allies, as it was only by working together that the Ghost crew was able to escape the Inquisitors in this episode.

"The Future of the Force"

Ahsoka Tano and the Ghost crew work to protect Force-sensitive children from being kidnapped by the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister in this episode. This is similar to Obi-Wan's mission of protecting young Luke Skywalker.

It is important to remember this crucial piece of Obi-Wan's journey, as it's not just about him evading the Empire, but about making sure that the Inquisitors, Vader, and no one from the Empire discovers Luke. Like Ahsoka and the Ghost crew, Obi-Wan is protecting innocent children and protecting the future of the Force.

"Shroud of Darkness"

Kanan vs Jedi Temple Guard in Star Wars Rebels

Ahsoka shares a recording of Anakin during the Clone Wars with Ezra. She speaks in glowing terms about how Anakin was not only powerful, but that he was kind and cared deeply about his friends. Despite learning that Anakin has become Darth Vader, Ahsoka struggles with the idea that the Anakin she knew and loved is gone, something that Obi-Wan will surely struggle with in Kenobi as well.

Also, as part of the vision that Yoda gives him, Kanan is tested and knighted by the Grand Inquisitor when he was a Jedi Temple Guard. While this is part of a vision and not the literal Grand Inquisitor, it does reveal that he was originally a Jedi Temple Guard, an important reminder that all Inquisitors were Jedi before falling to the dark side.

"Twilight of the Apprentice"

Ahsoka and Kanan duel the Fifth Brother, Seventh Sister, and Eighth Brother in Twilight of the Apprentice in Star Wars Rebels

"Twilight of the Apprentice" was a pivotal episode for the Inquisitors and for Darth Vader. The Fifth Brother, the Seventh Sister, and the Eighth Brother all met their ends on Malachor. The Inquisitors were no longer a threat in Rebels after this episode.

Meanwhile, Ahsoka faces Darth Vader in one of Rebels' most heartbreaking moments and tries to bring him back to the light. Even Ahsoka and her special bond with Anakin Skywalker isn't enough to save Vader as he duels his former apprentice and would have killed her if not for Ezra intervening through the World Between Worlds. Just like Ahsoka, Obi-Wan will have to reconcile with the fact that he cannot bring Vader back to the light.

"Twin Suns"

Obi-Wan and Maul in Star Wars Rebels

"Twin Suns" is the only Rebels episode where Obi-Wan appears in person. His devotion to watching over and protecting Luke shines through his actions and his attitude in this episode and will also shine through in Kenobi.

The Obi-Wan in "Twin Suns" is confident in himself, his mission, and exudes hope, even as Maul tries to tear him down. This is who Obi-Wan will become on Tatooine. Kenobi will help to show how he gets to that point despite everyone and everything he has lost.
