Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars #68

The story of Star Wars may hinge on the construction and firing of the Death Star, but fans never knew about the franchise's heroes' plan to get revenge against the Empire with an improvised Rebel Death Star... until now.

The main Star Wars series from Marvel Comics has expanded the lore and canon in ways fans never would have expected, including revealing the king who made the Rebellion possible, and even delivering a battle better than any Star Wars movie. With the shift to a new writer and artist team, the series itself has moved one massive step closer to The Empire Strikes Back in its own timeline. A time when the Rebellion became a true threat, and a time to make the Empire pay for Alderaan. Apparently also the time to show they, too, could launch a cruel sneak attack by firing a 'Death Star' of their own.

The story from writer Greg Pak and artist Phil Noto picks up just prior to The Empire Strikes Back--technically, inside of the opening crawl of text, as the Rebels work to keep their Hoth base a secret from the pursuing Empire. The distraction and counter-intelligence missions are assigned in Star Wars #68, with Chewie and C-3PO promoted to planet-killers. Their mission: set a trap for the Empire to descend upon... before detonating the planet, and the Imperial fleet along with it.

Fans can decide the battlefield morality of the plan, which isn't quite as ignoble as using a weapon against a planet known to support rebellion... but it isn't exactly valorous, either. Should fans read something into this story due to the plan being hatched by General Rieekan, a native of Alderaan? Perhaps. Either way, the planned trap hasn't developed as intended in the issue that follows. Which means it remains to be seen if the 'Rebel Death Star' proves as effective as their opposition's. Fans looking to read the arc for themselves can find the official plot synopsis and details below:
