Some of the best characters to come out of the new Star Wars canon have come from Star Wars: Rebels. With such loveable and unique personalities, brilliant individual stories, and a fantastic sense of family amongst the Ghost crew, the show's characters are terrific heroes in the saga, with everyone from Chopper to Zeb to Kanan showcasing the classic Star Wars hero trait of bravery.
Some characters like Kallus have one big act of bravery, while others like Zeb show fearlessness consistency in less significant actions, and then there are the likes of Hera who offer it all, with the show giving fans different levels of bravery from the characters.
AP-5
AP-5 joined Rebels relatively late into the show's run and slotted in perfectly to the C-3PO role, with arguably more humor on offer than the iconic golden droid. One thing the two share in abundance is the distaste for getting involved in action-based situations.
AP-5 is much less nervous and jittery than Threepio but still does not have the courage to match up compared to Rebels' other characters. He is vocally displeased at disorder and chaos, nobody expects AP to be a brave hero, and in an excellent duo with Chopper, he is a solid part of the show.
Chopper
Chopper is a complex character to define in terms of bravery. Audiences are often left wondering whether Chopper is brave or just an extremely angry, violent little astromech droid.
He is often grunting in displeasure when asked to do anything by anyone, but that does not stop him from chipping in when necessary. The fearlessness of Chopper shines when Hera is in danger or when he has to take down some bucketheads on his own. He may not show the grit, care, or courage of others, but Chopper rarely backs down when he does decide to get involved.
Garazeb Orrellios
Garazeb Orellios is such a great part of Rebels. Rarely is he at the forefront of an episode or arc, but he is always there contributing to the stories of others, and carving out great relationships with the likes of Ezra, all while showcasing his own personality when possible.
There is no doubt Zeb is a brave individual and has dealt with a lot with the earlier presumed loss of his people. Compared to other characters, though, Zeb lacks huge acts of courage that stand out throughout the show's four seasons. Of course, facing off against the likes of Rukh and the Inquisitors is terrific, but stuff like that is almost par for the course of the Ghost crew.
Alexsandr Kallus
Former ISB agent Alexsandr Kallus starts as a recurring antagonist in Rebels, being a constant enemy to the Ghost crew in the first half of the show before defecting to the rebellion in season 3.
Nobody could have really predicted the development of Kallus. He transformed from just a solid villain to a genuinely interesting look into the mind of an Imperial whose entire ideology has gotten challenged. Kallus' incredible bravery comes not only in the fact he does defect and join the rebellion, but in the fact he remained with the Empire for as long as possible while being Fulcrum, getting as much information as possible, putting his life at serious risk.
Captain Rex
When talking about Captain Rex and his bravery in Rebels, it is hard to ignore the immense courage he displays throughout The Bad Batch and The Clone Wars; overall, he may be the bravest character in Star Wars animation alongside Ahsoka.
Looking at Rex in the vacuum of Rebels, though, shows him just as brave. While he is unwilling to join the fight at first, fearful even, when he does join the war, he is there to stay. He fights alongside Jedi again, shows his usual brilliance and battle, and becomes a crucial soldier in the rebellion, all while dealing with the trauma of his past and the believed loss of Ahsoka.
Sabine Wren
While Hera and Kanan immediately establish themselves as outstanding, and Ezra's slow-burn development is continuous, it is a while before fans get into the depths of Sabine's character. When they do, though, it is a treat, and the levels of Sabine's bravery shines.
Sabine obviously shows the typical bravery expected of a Star Wars protagonist consistently, not backing down from fights, never abandoning her friends, etc. However, when Mandalore gets reintroduced in the show and fans learn about her past, fans see Sabine overcome her heartbreaking fears of her family and letting down her people. Yes, she was scared, but she chose to stay on Mandalore to try and make up for her mistakes which took incredible courage given her reputation on the planet.
Ahsoka Tano
Arguably the best animated Star Wars character ever, Ahsoka Tano came into Rebels at the close of season 1, proving to be just as brilliant as ever. With new maturity and wisdom, Ahsoka's bravery in Rebels was less rash but still evident.
Putting her life in grave danger by revealing herself to the rebels and helping out without the Fulcrum title, Ahsoka immediately displays the courage fans know her for. Where the true bravery comes is in her journey with Vader. Ahsoka has to struggle with the truth, and when she gets faced with her former Master (in essence, her older brother), she not only refuses to back down but refuses to leave him behind. She almost sacrifices herself and saves Ezra and Kanan's lives.
Hera Syndulla
The mother of the Ghost crew and a mature presence amongst a chaotic group, Hera Syndulla is such an awesome character who consistently displays incredible strength throughout Rebels.
Hera worked with other rebel cells and was a vital component of the overall rebellion coming together. She gets involved in the larger picture all while helping out with the smaller-scale issues throughout the show. Hera's strained familial relationship, the loss of Kanan, and the bringing together of such a unique group of people were all struggles she faced head-on and struggles she never stopped fighting because of. Selfless and full of spirit and fortitude, Hera is one of the more underappreciated heroes in the Galaxy.
Ezra Bridger
In terms of singular acts that sum up a character's courage in Rebels, there is arguably no better example than Ezra's iconic sacrifice in the series finale, where he saves his friends and Lothal by taking himself and Thrawn to the depths of space for years.
Ezra's bravery is, of course, not limited to this moving moment. Throughout the show's four seasons, Ezra shows great fortitude in dealing with his personal struggles and getting accustomed to a new life of heroism. Ezra is often brash and arrogant like all young protagonists in the franchise. Still, he is fearless, mainly when his friends and his planet are in danger. The way he faces off against Inquisitors and ventures to Tatooine for Obi-Wan are great examples of his true bravery. Ezra's only actual display of fear comes when he is faced with Vader, and he cannot be blamed for that.
Kanan Jarrus
There are few characters who have debuted in the new era of the Star Wars canon who are as great as Kanan Jarrus. One of the best examples of what a true Jedi should be, Kanan does have fear and insecurities, but how he deals with them simply adds to his bravery.
Kanan feels unworthy as a Jedi and as a teacher, but using the Force, he overcomes these issues and faces them head-on. He is not afraid of his emotions, but he controls them. He loves and has attachments but does not obsess over them, or let them lead him to the dark. Of course, Kanan's bravery cannot be talked about without mentioning his sacrifice. It is one of Star Wars' most affecting and beautifully crafted deaths and is a sacrifice that highlights the strength and courage of Kanan.
