In case there aren’t enough theories about Star Wars: The Last Jedi floating around the internet, here’s another one to add to the list. The title of this long-awaited film leads fans to assume that one of the current characters is going to be the so-called “final Jedi."
While most fans strongly believe its Rey, there’s plenty of evidence that it could actually be Finn instead. He has already been established as an important piece in The Resistance and he seems to be intrigued by the concept of The Force.
Maybe Rey won’t be the only one that is taught the ways of the Jedi. Whether fans love this theory or hate it, it is a real possibility. However, Jedi or not, Finn is still a great addition to the Star Wars universe. In this article we will be looking at a few hints from Star Wars: The Force Awakens that many viewers may not have noticed, which prove that Finn may indeed be the final Jedi.
Here are the 15 Reasons Why Finn IS the Last Jedi.
15. He Was Able To Hold His Own Against Kylo Without Training
The scene in The Force Awakens where Finn takes on Kylo Ren is memorable to most fans, mostly because people are confused as to how Kylo Ren wasn't able to kill Finn. It has been argued that the scene was simply ridiculous; an untrained man could never hold his own against someone trained with the ways of The Force.
However, perhaps instead of possessing a seemingly impossible strength, or just bad writing, Finn is force-sensitive. Yes, Ren was injured, but it’s surprising that Finn survived the fight without being cut down immediately, or at least seriously wounded.
The frustration is clear on Ren’s face-- Finn should have been overpowered, but something gave him strength. The Force helps the Jedi predict the movements of their opponent, so it’s possible that Finn's natural link to The Force guided him through their duel.
14. Rey Could Turn To The Dark Side
It’s entirely possible that, after training with Luke, Rey could choose the dark side of The Force. If Rey is a Skywalker, then, much like the Skywalkers before her, she was born with a natural inclination to The Force.
Both Anakin and Luke toyed with the idea of succumbing to the Dark Side. Being related to Darth Vader would subject her to the same temptations that Ben Solo faced before becoming Kylo Ren.
Even if she is not a Skywalker, the temptation of the Dark Side is there for any Jedi. She could attempt to redeem Kylo Ren and turn him to the Light Side, but ultimately succumb to the Dark Side and join the First Order.
This would leave Finn, who is possibly Force-sensitive, to train with Luke and become the Last Jedi in order to defeat the First Order.
13. He wielded a lightsaber
Everyone knows a lightsaber is the weapon of choice for a Jedi. Although a character doesn’t have to be force-sensitive to wield one-- as exemplified by Han Solo in the original trilogy-- the ability to fight with a lightsaber raises some interesting questions.
Finn was able to hold his own against a trained Kylo Ren without any experience fighting with a lightsaber. It’s hard to believe he could even work the weapon without injuring himself.
The writers could have easily given his character a blaster, but, instead, they specifically gave him a lightsaber. On top of this, the lightsaber was blue. This shows that he may have a connection with the Light Side that he unknowingly tapped into, which enabled him to use the weapon, even if he wasn’t the most graceful fighter.
12. Finn and Rey are drawn to each other and she's clearly Force-sensitive
From the moment Rey and Finn meet, the audience can sense their chemistry. Whether their relationship is romantic or platonic, it’s clear that something is bringing them together. Not long after they meet each other on Jakku, they end up running for their lives to escape the planet.
They each impress the other with their skills on the Millennium Falcon, and to instantly trust someone that quickly seems to be fate.
Obi Wan once said that the force “surrounds us.” It’s not impossible that the powers of The Force could be pushing Finn and Rey together for a reason. The audience is already aware that Rey is Force-sensitive and may be on the path to become a Jedi. Could Finn’s draw to Rey foreshadow his Force abilities as well?
11. Rey Rejected The Idea of Being a Jedi Multiple Times
In The Force Awakens, Rey makes it clear that she isn’t interested in becoming a Jedi. She has always believe them to be a myth, and, upon learning they exist, she is overwhelmed. She is unsettled by the vision she has when she touches Luke’s lightsaber, and refuses to take it from Maz.
When she eventually takes the lightsaber to find Luke, it may be interpreted as Rey asking to be trained in the Jedi arts.
However, it could also be a cry for help, where she’s asking him to take the burden of becoming a Jedi away from her. When she refuses to wield the lightsaber and accept her training, it falls to Finn. He’s already wielded it in battle and strongly believes the First Order must be defeated.
Luke could then find him and train him to be the Last Jedi.
10. He Has A Sense For Good and Justice
Finn has a natural instinct for doing what’s right, despite being raised as a Stormtrooper. His actions are all due to the fact that he has a strong moral compass and believes he must do the “right” thing. Finn even exclaims this remark to Poe.
He almost possesses a childlike optimism when facing the world. Everything has to be just and fair. He has an instinctual moral compass that points him to what’s just and right.
While some viewers insist he’s running scared the whole film-- and he very well could be-- something is pointing him in a certain direction. All of his choices end up making him a hero, which means that The Force could be influencing his actions, and one day he could learn to work with this influence and use it to train as a Jedi.
9. Finn Is Simply Too Lucky, The Force Must Be On His Side
The fact that Finn escapes so much danger throughout the film with barely a scratch seems a bit too good to be true. Because he was a Stormtrooper, he’s had little real world experience and little to no free will.
For someone who is suddenly thrust into the world on his own, he sure is able to handle a lot. He was able to escape the First Order, attack enemy ships while flying with Poe, help Rey escape from Jakku on the Millennium Falcon, and fight with a lightsaber without training. The list goes on and on.
In many of these situations it is probable that an average person would never make it out alive, so it cannot be mere a coincidence. The Force is guiding Finn on his journey throughout The Force Awakens.
8. Rey Becomes a Jedi and Trains Finn, But Then Dies
From what we've seen from the official teaser trailer for The Last Jedi, it is very likely that Luke will inevitably train Rey in the ways of The Force. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that she is the last Jedi ever. After becoming a Jedi, she could become Finn’s mentor and train him. This would mean that he would become another Jedi.
Much like Obi Wan and Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope, Rey could face off with Kylo Ren and lose. Her death would leave Finn alone as the Last Jedi.
Alternatively, rather than being taught by Rey before her sudden death, Finn could also be a witness to her death, which spurs him to ask Luke to train him in order to gain revenge and defeat Kylo and the First Order.
7. He's Naturally Heroic and Brave
Much like Finn’s natural moral compass, he’s also instinctively heroic and brave. On the surface, he may look scared throughout the film, but his fear doesn’t stop him from continuing to fight. He wants to protect Rey (even if she’s fully capable on her own) because he knows that she is also good and kind.
He’s often torn between his own self-interest (or survival instinct to stay live) and his ability to be a hero, but he always chooses to save the day.
This goes hand-in-hand with his sense of good and justice. He fights for what he believes to be the right thing, even if it scares him. Finn knew he coudn’t win against Kylo Ren, but it didn’t keep him from trying. The Force could be a part of the strength that makes him hold his ground and fight, rather than flee.
6. He Allied With the Light Side
Technically there are no official Jedi on the Light Side fighting the First Order in The Force Awakens, but Rey is clearly headed in this direction. As soon as Finn meets her, he immediately presents himself as an ally. It’s already been established that Finn hates the First Order.
Rey uses The Force to battle Kylo Ren, but, in a way, so does Finn when he fights him with a blue lightsaber. The two of them are able to hold their own by allying with the Light Side against the Dark Side.
Maz is able to sense the Light Side in Rey, and she also appears to see something special in Finn. Who’s to say that she isn’t sensing that he’s Force-sensitive as well? If she is, then it's obvious that she saw the light in him, because she wasn’t afraid. Instead she wanted to help the two characters, which is a strong clue that they are both on The Light side.
5. Kylo Ren Sensed The Force in him
Finn refuses to fire his blaster as the First Order attacks the village. During the attack, Kylo Ren stares down Finn as if he knows something is off-- perhaps sensing Finn's connection to the Force.
Why else would Kylo Ren stop in the middle of his conquest to focus on a single Stormtrooper? It could have been a hint that Finn is going to become a Jedi in the future. However, Kylo perhaps doesn't do anything to Finn because he hopes that he won’t become a problem. But, reacting to his force-sensitivity could trigger Finn’s ability to use it.
Or, maybe it’s a reminder of the struggle Ren has within himself. He’s torn between the Light Side and the Dark Side. Finn was originally a Stormtrooper allied with The First Order, and his potential ties to the Force could cause Kylo to question this. Either way, this scene presented strong evidence that Finn carries a connection to the Force.
4. He Turned Against The Stormtroopers Despite Being One
Finn rejects the actions of the First Order regardless of the fact that was conditioned to become a Stormtrooper his entire life. Something-- perhaps The Force-- prompted him to realize that the beliefs that they had taught him were wrong.
He’s seemingly the only Stormtrooper to actively reject The First Order and escape. He was able to defy the commands of those above him, thus breaking his “conditioning.” He resists it against all odds.
As mentioned before, Kylo Ren probably senses this about Finn. He isn’t like any of the other troopers-- there is something good, heroic, and intuitive about him. These are all traits of the Jedi who fight for the Light Side. There aren’t many reasons why Finn could have such a strong moral compass as a Stormtrooper, and The Force is the most logical conclusion.
3. Rey is Too Obvious. They Need a Twist
Star Wars is known for its twists: Vader is Luke’s father, Leia and Luke are siblings, Anakin is Darth Vader. There are too many to count. As of right now, the most obvious Jedi-to-be is Rey. The trailer for The Last Jedi seems to be her training alongside Luke to become a Jedi.
However, movies are always more intriguing if the audience can’t guess the outcome of the plot. It would not be surprising if, rather than making the expected character train to become a Jedi, it is actually Finn. Everyone knows there has to be a twist.
This is why there are countless crazy fan-theories out there. The Force Awakens gave enough hints at Finn being force-sensitive that the audience would find it surprising, but conceivable.
2. He Was The One "Awakened" By The Force, Not Rey
Most fans assume that the “awakening” in the title of The Force Awakens refers to Rey when she discovers that she’s able to use The Force and goes off to presumably train with Luke. However, Finn is the one who actually “awakens” first.
As he’s watching the attack on the village of Jakku, he’s suddenly frozen. He watches innocent people being slaughtered and realizes that the First Order is wrong. The moment that Finn is unable to fire his blaster, he’s awakened to the truth.
The title The Force Awakens alludes to Finn being force-sensitive. If he “awakens” during the attack, it must clearly be The Force within him. This is all before Rey has any of her visions or knowledge of the lightsaber, which means that he’s the one who sensed The Force first.
1. Maz hands Finn the lightsaber
Maz appears to be the new Yoda of The Force Awakens, as she has a deep connection to the Force and is able to sense it in others. After Rey rejects the lightsaber, Maz hands it to Finn.
Is this so he can deliver it to Rey? On the surface, it seems likely. However, he ends up choosing to use it in battle, instead of using a blaster, which Maz encourages . Not only this, but he wields it decently.
Maz must have sensed The Force in Finn and therefore knew that he would be able to control the lightsaber without any training. There was no conceivable reason why the filmmakers would include such an iconic, close up shot of Maz handing Finn the lightsaber if it wasn’t critical to the story.
Finn has equal, if not more, interactions with the lightsaber than Rey, and this can’t just be a coincidence.
