Lucasfilm’s latest Star Wars project, Andor (now streaming on Disney+), has introduced fans to another hilarious droid character, B2EMO. Cassian’s little red droid has a wonderfully deadpan sense of humor that recalls the comedic stylings of Star Wars icons like Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and fellow droid R2-D2.

In the prequel trilogy, George Lucas was more focused on humor than ever before. From the dry one-liners of Qui-Gon Jinn to the colorful podrace announcements of Fode and Beed, the Star Wars prequels are full of hysterical characters.

Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui-Gon smiles in The Phantom Menace

Qui-Gon Jinn’s sense of humor is hilariously dry. He bluntly tells Jar Jar Binks, “The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.” There’s also a lot of laughs to be had at Qui-Gon’s obliviousness when he badmouths the queen to her handmaiden, unaware that the handmaiden is actually the real queen in disguise.

The Jedi master’s zen approach to life means that he always has a wonderfully unique perspective on things. When his aquatic transport is attacked by a sea creature that’s promptly attacked by an even larger sea creature, Qui-Gon simply says, “There’s always a bigger fish.”

General Grievous

Technically, General Grievous is a nefarious villain. But his shameless cowardice always gets a few laughs. As soon as there’s a sign of danger aboard his vessel, he retreats to an escape pod and says, “Time to abandon ship!”

Grievous is always looking for a new “fine addition” to his collection of lightsabers. He’s so obsessed with collecting the lightsabers of dead Jedi Knights that it’s become a popular meme.

Jar Jar Binks

Jar Jar Binks giving a thumbs-up

Jar Jar Binks is one of the most divisive characters in the Star Wars universe. Some fans find Jar Jar to be painfully unfunny, but the kids in the audience tend to find him hilarious and there are some gems in his unique way of speaking, like referring to a long story as “a long-o tell-o.”

The character also has some great physical humor, like when he takes down a bunch of battle droids in the midst of a heated skirmish on Naboo, completely by accident.

Anakin Skywalker

Anakin in his cockpit in Revenge of the Sith

As he inches toward the dark side, Anakin Skywalker gets fewer comedic moments (except for the unintentional ones, like his oft-memed slaughter of a room full of Jedi younglings). But during his tenure as a wayward Jedi apprentice, he gets a few quippy one-liners, like “This is where the fun begins!”

He also has a funny reaction whenever Obi-Wan chews him out. When Obi-Wan wonders what took him so long to fly over to save him, Anakin replies, “I couldn’t find a speeder I really liked.”

Dexter Jettster

Dexter in his diner in Attack of the Clones

Obi-Wan confides in many close friends throughout the prequel trilogy. When he finds that a planet is missing from the Jedi Archives, he goes to Coruscant’s ‘50s-style diner to speak to his four-armed buddy Dexter Jettster, who identified the bounty hunter’s poisoned dart as a Kamino saberdart.

From his greasy apron to his poor personal hygiene to his larger-than-life demeanor, Dexter exhibits all the clichés of a short-order fry cook.

Fode & Beed

Fode and Beed comment on the podrace in The Phantom Menace

Fode and Beed don’t have a huge role in The Phantom Menace, but their cameo appearance is unforgettable. They’re the announcers of the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. As two heads attached to the same body, they offer two sports commentary perspectives for the price of one.

All throughout the thrilling podracing sequence, Fode and Beed get some huge laughs with their reactionary lines: “I don’t care what universe you’re from, that’s gotta hurt!”

Yoda

Yoda looking back in Attack of the Clones

Yoda was one of the funniest characters in the original trilogy. When Luke came to his planet to train with him, Yoda pretended to be a lunch-stealing jerk just for kicks. He continued to get big laughs throughout the prequel trilogy, with an expanded role.

Much like he did in the original trilogy, Yoda always had a deadpan one-liner in the chamber in the prequels. When Obi-Wan interrupted a Jedi training session with the news that there’s a planet missing from the Jedi Archives, Yoda jokes, “Lost a planet, Master Obi-Wan has. How embarrassing!”

Chancellor Palpatine

Palpatine is the big bad of the prequel trilogy who leads a double life as a harmless politician and a sinister Sith Lord, secretly plotting to overturn the Republic and reform it as the evil, oppressive Empire. But his use of a phony friendly facade presents some hilarious moments.

Ian McDiarmid’s deceptively camp deliveries of lines like “Ironic,” and “Do it!” have had fans laughing for years. Plus, when he’s battling Mace Windu, he brags about “unlimited power!”

R2-D2

R2-D2 in The Phantom Menace

R2-D2 was always hilarious in the original trilogy, but he was even more hilarious in the prequel trilogy because the newfangled CGI technology allowed Lucas to give him a bunch of extra gadgets. He spurts out oil and lights it on fire to get rid of the Super Battle Droids trying to take him captive.

As usual, Artoo is the unsung hero in the prequel trilogy. He’s constantly putting himself on the line to protect the heroes and he never gets any praise for it.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Like his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi has a delightfully dry sense of humor. When a captive Anakin says he came to save Obi-Wan, a captive Obi-Wan sarcastically jokes, “Good job.” When he confronts General Grievous and his droid armies on Utapau, he casually says, “Hello there.” After losing his lightsaber and having to use a blaster to kill Grievous, he quips, “So uncivilized.”

In the very first set-piece of the trilogy, after narrowly avoiding an attempted assassination, Obi-Wan reintroduces himself to audiences with a joke: “You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiations were short.”
