If Star Wars fans were wondering why Poe Dameron's squad of X-wing fighters were a no-show during The Last Jedi, the comic books have provided an answer. Whether they would have been more usefil with the Resistance fleet... is for fans to decide.
The realm of Star Wars comics have expanded the story of the films more than usual recently, including "fixing" some of the biggest Last Jedi complaints in the comic book adaptation. Now, it seems the mysterious absence of Poe's entire fighter group during the Resistance's retreat is the latest clarification. And in our exclusive preview of Star Wars: Poe Dameron #30, fans can see they were doing anything but avoiding the action.
Black Squadron had their own mission during The Last Jedi, and it went about as smoothly as every other hero's.
Previous issues of Poe Dameron have slowly explained the missing pilots of Black Squadron, since the film offered almost no hint whatsoever. In fact, the First Order's explosive strike on the Resistance's hangar bay may have led many to assume that Temmin "Snap" Wexley, Karé Kun, Jessika Pava and the rest of the squad were killed as unceremoniously as Admiral Ackbar. The truth? Black Squadron was given a mission by General Leia herself, as the only soldiers brave enough to pull it off.
It was Black Squadron who fled the chase so they could seek out potential allies, gathering friendly forces to back up the Resistance by the time they took shelter on the salt-covered planet Crait. Take a look at these first pages from Issue #30 to see how successful their mission has been so far:
The addition of the planet Ikkrukk and Grail City to Star Wars canon is reason enough for many to get reading Poe Dameron now, if they weren't already. But if anything, this storyline is making it seem like Poe got the easier mission, requiring he simply stay put and let the fleet's leaders follow their plan. Meanwhile, the pilots sent out to gather aid have ended up hopping from one nightmare to another. First came Pastoria, where their assistance was forced in helping one leader defeat a political rival, only to be left high and dry. Now, their next recruitment mission has become a rescue operation facing down a First Order cruiser and a bombarded city of innocent civilians.
Fans will get to see how this leg of Black Squadron's journey shakes out when the comic arrives on August 15th, but for now, check out a full synopsis for the issue below:
