Oscar Isaac addresses whether he would be interested in returning to the Star Wars franchise as Poe Dameron and under what conditions. A lesser known actor at the time, Isaac was one of many who joined Star Wars when Disney rebooted the franchise with 2015's The Force Awakens. Though writer/director J.J. Abrams originally had plans to kill off the hotshot fighter pilot in the first film, Isaac's performance was so endearing that he decided to keep him around, becoming part of the sequel trilogy's main trio alongside Daisy Ridley's Rey and John Boyega's Finn.

Though many Star Wars alum have struggled to find work outside the franchise, that hasn't been the case for Isaac. In between installments in the sequel trilogy, Isaac starred as the titular villain in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse and lent his voice to Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse while also starring in arthouse projects like the Coen brothers' Suburbicon and Alex Garland's Annihilation. Since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Isaac joined another potential sci-fi franchise, Denis Villenueve's Dune, in the key role of Duke Leto Atreides and not to mention joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the Disney+ series Moon Knight. But still, many wonder when Isaac might return to his breakthrough role.

During a recent appearance on Sirius XM's The Jess Cagle Show, Isaac addressed whether he would be interested in returning to Star Wars. Though Isaac began his response a bit indecisive, the actor went on to say he is "open to anything" and revealed two conditions for his potential return – a “great story and a great director.” Read his full response below:

I don't know. I'm open to anything. You never know. I have no real feeling one way or the other. I'm open to any kind of good story, any good thing to do. Time's the one thing that becomes much more challenging as you get older and with kids and all that it's like where do these things fit in and you start realizing that there's not enough time for all of it. But if there was a great story and a great director and [Kathleen Kennedy] came to me and was like, "Hey we've got this idea," I'm so so open to it.

Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron flying in Star Wars The Last Jedi

Isaac cites time as another factor affecting his potential return as Poe Dameron. Fresh off an Emmy nomination for Scenes from a Marriage, the actor is currently in the prime of his career and in very high demand. Issac reprised his voice role as Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 in the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, due out in June 2023, and is already attached to a bunch of other projects, including a Metal Gear Solid movie, Ben Stiller's London, and Barry Levinson's Francis and the Godfather. Moon Knight season 2 is also a possibility. With so much on his plate, Isaac simply might not have time to facilitate his return as Poe Dameron.

Still, Isaac's "open to anything" response is a significant improvement from the last time he answered a similar question. In 2020, Issac said he had no desire to return to Star Wars, though at the time, he was still fresh off shooting the three films. Now that he's had some time to rest, recuperate, and reflect, it's understandable that Isaac's answer has changed. It's unclear what Star Wars project Poe could return in, if any, and whether it would be theatrical or Disney+. For now, viewers will have to wait to see if anything materializes.
