The Star Wars movies may have brought an end to the Skywalker saga, returning Anakin and Luke Skywalker's famous blue lightsaber to Tatooine... but the biggest plot hole surrounding the weapon is only now being explained. And in the process, adding a mysterious new chapter to Luke's Jedi journey.

When Marvel announced that their line of Star Wars comics would be coming to an end, having finally reached the events of the film The Empire Strikes Back (previously filled in the gap between it an A New Hope), the next relaunch was also confirmed. Following immediately after Darth Vader sliced off Luke's hand in their epic Cloud City duel made sense. But when the early plot details revealed Luke, Leia, and Lando return to Cloud City, many movie fans suspected that the comic books would finally explain the plot hole of Luke's lost lightsaber . You know, the one that fell with Luke's severed hand... before turning up in Maz Kanata's bar in The Force Awakens to be passed on to Rey. But in a new preview, the explanation is turning out to be far more exciting -- and far more mysterious -- than anyone would have guessed.

While Star Wars #1 was spent simply recovering from their epic defeats, Star Wars #2 gave Luke the time to realize that he would need to return to Cloud City and recover his father's lightsaber, in order to complete his Jedi training. But it was then that a strange Force vision clouded his mind, revealing Luke's lightsaber was caught by someone. A robed, hooded, mystery woman offering a single phrase to Luke: "Skywalker... follow your destiny."

Star Wars Darth Vader Luke Hand Comic

Now that Luke has entered the pit where all fallen scrap on Cloud City comes to rest, the official preview of Star Wars #4 gives him an even bigger, and more loaded vision for fans to dissect. The experience isn't too dissimilar from the Force Vision Rey experienced touching the lightsaber in The Force Awakens, suggesting a similar type of communication is at work. But unlike Rey's, this new twist is changing the past in order to stitch together the original trilogy and the new. And from the looks of it, the true travels of the Skywalker saber could change everything fans know about Luke's ascension to a Jedi Knight.

The mystery Luke is trying to solve will continue into future issues, but readers can already see how this new chapter in the Star Wars saga begins. Take a look for yourselves at the official preview pages from StarWars.com below:

With figures of the dark side and light sending Luke mixed messages, he is ultimately torn between two missions. One, save Leia frozen in carbonite after last issue. Or follow the call of the woman holding his father's weapon -- a woman some fans suspect may be Mara Jade returning to Star Wars canon. The solicitation details for the next issues confirm "the next steps on Luke Skywalker's search for Jedi wisdom" will send him in pursuit of this mystery woman and planet. But who she is, what she's after, or how it results in Luke's new yellow lightsaber is anyone's guess for now. Until the full issue arrives, readers can see the full credits and plot synopsis below:
