Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #5

The original Knights of Ren have been revealed in a new comic, and some of them are aliens. Previously revealed to pre-date Kylo Ren’s existence, the Knights are a force of their own in the upcoming Star Wars miniseries, Crimson Reign.

Initially associated with the First Order and led by Kylo Ren, the Knights of Ren have been a mysterious group of bad guys since The Force Awakens. Many fans were let down by their depiction in The Rise of Skywalker, where they hardly had anything to do before being killed off. The villainous team had potential to be the next coolest thing in the Star Wars galaxy, but were demoted to serve as a plot device. However, with the announced miniseries Crimson Reign promising to elaborate on the Knights and further explain their origins, there might be some hope for the discarded henchmen. As the recent crossover event War of the Bounty Hunters bridged the gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, its final issue also teased what’s to come.

The original Knights of Ren have shown up at the end of War of the Bounty Hunters #5, written by Charles Soule with art by Luke Ross. It turns out, the band of evildoers was slightly bigger and included aliens before assimilating to the First Order. While many of their faces still haven’t been seen as they wear their signature black masked costumes, the Knights of Ren were once fairly inclusive of alien species. On the original roster, it seems a Twi’lek was a Knight, along with a bear-like creature, and possibly even a Jawa. Since their true appearances are concealed, there’s potential that more aliens are a part of the team.

In theory, the Knights of Ren from the sequel trilogy might have included aliens, as they never removed their helmets. However, there seems to be some intentionality behind the clear inclusion of other species on the original team. When a version of the Knights of Ren first appeared in comics which predated the sequels, it didn’t seem that any aliens were members. During Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, it was revealed that the original Ren, who is included in the panel as the shirtless frontman, had lost his crew at some point.

From the lineup, it seems that only two Knights go onto appear alongside Kylo Ren in the sequel era. Since the movie iteration of the Knights of Ren were featured in the prequel comic detailing Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side, there’s a chance many original members will meet their demise in Crimson Reign. Unfortunately, the reason that aliens don’t appear on the team in live action could relate to the First Order excluding various species. According to the Knights of Ren’s known future, they might not have alien recruits for long.
