The upcoming Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, will feature a new character, Omega, who may be the final Clone Trooper made from the Jango Fett template. As a sequel series to Star Wars: The Clone Wars with clones as its protagonists, The Bad Batch will continue to explore the humanity of the Clone Troopers as the Republic becomes the Galactic Empire and the Clone Troopers are eventually phased out in favor of recruited Stormtroopers. The Bad Batch themselves are elite clone commandos with mutations (or, in Echo’s case, cybernetic modifications) that make them particularly formidable. If Omega is the last clone of Jango Fett, she also has a mutation or modification that sets her apart from her brethren.

All Clone Troopers are grown from the template of Jango Fett, a Mandalorian foundling, and the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter until his death at the Battle of Geonosis. As explained by Kaminoan Prime Minister Lama Su in the Clone Wars episode “Clone Cadets,” Jango’s death resulted in his DNA needing to be stretched to produce more clones, leading to instances of mutations or other imperfections. While the Bad Batch’s clones were all deemed “useful” by the Kaminoans and the Republic, some clones, like 99, were given non-combat roles due to their mutations. As embryos, all clones are given a control chip implant to override their free will and compel them to kill their Jedi allies, facilitating Palpatine’s fascist coup.

Omega shares facial features with the Clone Cadets seen in “Death Trap,” and wears a similar uniform, along with a pendant that’s identical to one worn by Nala Se (a Kaminoan and one of the primary engineers of Jango’s clones). While accents are not hereditary, most Clone Troopers sound like their template, Jango. In the latest trailer, Omega speaks with a New Zealand accent (Concord Dawn in-universe), further indicating that she’s a Jango clone. Whether an intentional modification by the Kaminoans or a mutation, Omega appears to be the first female clone of Jango Fett. Her name, Omega, is the last letter in the Greek alphabet, and often signifies finality, implying that she is the last Clone Trooper grown from Jango Fett’s template.

Omega in The Bad Batch

As revealed in Marvel’s Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comics, the final batches of Jango Fett Clone Troopers were grown, trained, and brainwashed into Imperial service, becoming the first of the Empire’s elite Purge Troopers. Purge Troopers accompanied Imperial Inquisitors in their hunt for Jedi who survived Order 66. If Omega is the last Jango clone, this most likely would have been her fate as well, if not for her desertion along with the Bad Batch. How Omega and The Bad Batch clones will remove or otherwise resist the influence of their control chips is yet to be seen, but by escaping Kamino, Omega avoids becoming a mindless pawn of a fascist regime.

Without the influence of their control chips, the Clone Troopers are fundamentally decent beings who believe in democracy. The series finale of The Clone Wars highlights the tragedy of the clones, as they were as much the victims of Palpatine’s machinations as the Jedi. Star Wars: The Bad Batch will feature clone protagonists at a time where Clone Troopers are reaching the end of their usefulness to Palpatine and the Empire. The clones are eventually replaced by recruited Stormtroopers, and if Omega turns out to be the final Jango Fett Clone Trooper, she’ll represent the legacy of the Star Wars franchise’s often-unsung heroes.
