Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of BioWare's longest running projects, allowing players to experience the Star Wars galaxy thousands of years before any of the films. Currently, there are eight independent class stories split between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire factions. Players can play tech-based or Force-wielding classes in the form of Troopers, Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, Imperial Agents, Sith Inquisitors, Sith Warriors, Jedi Consulars, and Jedi Knights. In addition to the vanilla stories, BioWare has been increasing the number of expansions available to new, existing, and returning players, including its latest release: Legacy of the Sith.
Both Republic and Imperial players will be able to access the new Legacy of the Sith expansion when it releases in celebration of Star Wars: The Old Republic's 10th Anniversary. Like most content updates featured in SWTOR, the Legacy of the Sith expansion will consist of a series of story missions with varying cast and goals depending on the faction, a new Flashpoint, and a new Operation. Thanks to BioWare's Legacy of the Sith press release and recent livestream, there are more than a few details that have been revealed to the public, giving fans a window into what they can expect in SWTOR's future.
The Legacy of the Sith's plot will place heavy emphasis on SWTOR's continuation of Darth Malgus' story, who recently returned under the service of Empress Acina, acting as her Wrath and secret agent. While the player and Darth Malgus have often butted heads, those who pledge themselves to the Sith Empire will discover that Malgus usually has the Empire's best interests at heart. The Legacy of the Sith will send players to secure a "vital planet" in the Star Wars galaxy, which has been confirmed to be Manaan, and have them engage in a military campaign against the opposing faction to claim victory for their side.
SWTOR's Legacy of the Sith Introduces A New Combat Skill Mechanic
During this conflict in SWTOR, Sith, Jedi, Soldiers, and Mercenaries alike will come to face Darth Malgus, who appears to have gone rogue (again) and uncover his dastardly plot. It is currently unknown what Malgus' ultimate motivations could be, but given his recent status in service to Acina, it is likely this plan will attempt to secure him more power within the Empire. Darth Malgus regaining influence in the Sith Empire would be a threat to both Republic and Imperial players alike.
For the first time, BioWare will be allowing players to exchange combat abilities between Star Wars Republic and Imperial classes based on their tech or Force designation. This planned change will implement significant diversity into the builds that are currently in place. By allowing Jedi Knights in SWTOR to utilize Sith Warrior abilities and vice versa, or Bounty Hunters and Smugglers swapping blaster styles and combos, it will surely turn the current meta builds into yesterday's news. Player classes will also feature what BioWare describes as "updates to itemization and loadout experiences as well as streamlined class design" when the expansion releases, though specific details as to what these updates entail have yet to be revealed.
The Legacy of the Sith will return to the aquatic planet Manaan, which was a location that didn't receive as much activity or attention during its introduction in the Shadow of Revan SWTOR expansion released back in 2014. It appears that players will be warring over the kolto supplies that are present on Manaan, which is a valuable medical resource to both sides of the war. The story of the Legacy of the Sith will continue on Elom, into the ruins of a Sith fortress that holds secrets for the Force users of the Star Wars galaxy.
The Legacy of the Sith expansion is sure to rejuvenate the interests of Star Wars: The Old Republic fans. The storyline of Darth Malgus has been a recurring presence throughout the ongoing SWTOR story, with Malgus being one of the first characters encountered. The return to Manaan is sure to excite fans of the aquatic planet, and the combat mechanic will further diversify the gameplay of every class. Star Wars: The Old Republic's Legacy of the Sith expansion is planned to release during the holiday season of 2021, though no specific release date has been confirmed yet.
