It appears we may be seeing a young Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The Disney+ Star Wars spin-off is reportedly casting a child version of the classic hero of the original trilogy, as well as featuring the return of a familiar face from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
Shortly before the release and subsequent success of The Mandalorian, Disney announced the as-of-yet untitled series, which will have Ewan McGregor reprise his role from the prequels as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. It will chronicle his adventures in the time between the great Jedi Purge in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith and his own heroic sacrifice to save the budding Rebel Alliance in Star Wars: A New Hope. During this period, the former mentor of Anakin Skywalker lived in exile on the desert world of Tatooine, watching over the young Luke Skywalker as he grew into the man who would one day save the galaxy from the Empire.
According to FandomWire, Luke Skywalker will be shown as a child in the series, which lines up with the time in which the show will be set. In addition, Joel Edgerton will reprise his role as Owen Lars, Anakin’s maternal stepbrother, who raised Luke following the death of his mother, Padme Amidala, and the descent of his father into the evil Darth Vader.
The Obi-Wan series was previously planned to be a movie, but in the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story’s poor box office performance and the resulting reshuffling of Disney’s project slate for the franchise, the concept was refitted for the fledgling Disney+ streaming service. The show will be directed by Deborah Chow, who previously headed three episodes of The Mandalorian, as well as episodes of Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive Jessica Jones and the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.
There’s no word yet on how young Luke will be in the series, or what his exact role will be, but the series will likely explore Obi-Wan’s distant relationship with the boy - which was previously glimpsed in novels and comics - as well as the former Jedi’s reputation on Tatooine as a “strange old hermit” living out by the Dune Sea. Likewise, during A New Hope, we hear Owen tell Luke that Kenobi is a dangerous old man, indicating a strained relationship between the two since the latter delivered a baby Luke to the former and his wife. Fans will get a deeper look into Obi-Wan’s past with Luke and the Lars family when his untitled Star Wars spin-off arrives on Disney+.
