Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul's final battle in Star Wars Rebels is imagined in a live-action version through fan-art. The arch-nemeses faced off a few times throughout the years, with their final fight taking place on Tatooine before the events of the original trilogy.

The general assumption was that Maul had died following his duel with Obi-Wan in 1999's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but it was later revealed that he survived, albeit in a very bad shape both physically and mentally. Darth Sidious' former apprentice had to work hard to regain his sensibilities to exact revenge for what happened to him. But after several failed attempts to do just that, Maul ultimately met his end at the hands of Obi-Wan in what was a surprisingly quick duel, unlike their previous encounters as tackled in the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Digital artist Paolo Puggioni recreated Maul and Obi-Wan's fight on the sand planet, visualizing what it would look like had it been done in live-action. As revealed by the creator, he came up with the illustration way back in 2016 for Star Wars Destiny, but had repeatedly failed to post it online. Check out the image below:

While Puggioni didn't reveal exactly when he created the illustration of Maul and Obi-Wan's fight, it sounds like he did it before it actually materialized on the screen. The pair's final duel was featured in the penultimate episode of Star Wars Rebels season 3, which aired in March 2017. Prior to that, Maul and Obi-Wan's last encounter was in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, wherein the Jedi was much younger in appearance than what he looks like in this image. Furthermore, the backdrop of this illustration checks out with how things panned out in Star Wars Rebels with a location resembling Tatooine and the fight taking place at night. In his brief description for the piece, Puggioni didn't mention Star Wars Rebels at all, which could mean that he had this idea on his own.

It's curious if there's any chance that this short but meaningful fight will ever have a live-action version. Since Disney+ and Lucasfilm are moving forward with an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, with Ewan McGregor set to reprise the legendary Jedi, there's an opportunity to revisit his final fight with Maul and present it in a different way for those who may not have seen the original animated version in Star Wars Rebels. This could also expand on the moment, showing it from Obi-Wan's perspective instead of Maul's, that way they could also properly explain why the fight didn't last as long as their previous duel - something that still confuses some.
