Jon Hamm explains why he really wants to join the Star Wars franchise. Hamm became famous playing ad man Don Draper on AMC’s prestige TV classic Mad Men. Next up the actor can be seen bossing around Tom Cruise as Vice Admiral Cyclone in the long-awaited action sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

The aforementioned Mad Men obviously was the show that proved Hamm’s old school leading man qualities. But along the way the star has demonstrated a lot of versatility too, making memorable appearances on sitcoms like The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock alongside starring roles in dramas like Beirut and The Report.  Hamm's done his share of quirky genre stuff too, memorably playing the villainous buddy in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, and later tackling the role of the Archangel Gabriel in Amazon’s Good Omens. The actor has also become known for his voice work, appearing as the narrator on the Marvel series Legion and voicing Iron Man on the animated M.O.D.O.K..

But even with all his success it seems there is one feather Hamm still wishes to add to his cap. During the press junket for Top Gun: Maverick, the actor revealed the one opportunity he’s most regretted missing out on so far. Via ComicBook.com, he explained why he wants to join the Star Wars universe:

"You know, I've been really fortunate in my career and I'll be the first one to say it. I don't have a lot of regrets. There haven't been a lot of movies that I've almost gotten that that, 'Oh, I would have been nice to be in and that. The only franchise that I always wanted to be in that I just never have been for whatever reason was the Star Wars franchise. That for me was the first big movie when I was six or seven years old, or whatever it was when it came out, that I was like, 'This is probably the greatest movie I've ever seen in my life and we'll ever see.’"

Jon Hamm in Top Gun 2 Maverick

Hamm as it happens has had one brush with the Star Wars universe. In 2017, the actor voiced Boba Fett in the audiobook version of From a Certain Point of View, a collection of Star Wars-derived short stories published to celebrate the 40th anniversary of A New Hope. But clearly voicing Boba Fett in an audiobook is a long way from actually appearing on screen as a Star Wars character.

And what kind of character would Hamm play in Star Wars? With his previously-noted leading man qualities, he would seem to make perfect sense as a classic good guy, perhaps a character similar to Timothy Olyphant’s heroic Mandalorian lawman Cobb Vanth. A Han Solo-like rogue would also be up Hamm’s alley, given his Don Draper experience. But Hamm has actually shown he can play a villain too, never more memorably than in Baby Driver, where he portrayed the slimy Buddy. Considering his versatility, it seems Hamm would be right for just about any role in Star Wars. He might even accept a Daniel Craig-like Stormtrooper cameo, given his obvious affection for the franchise and strong desire to be a part of it.

Of course there was a time when appearing in live-action Star Wars meant being in a movie. Nowadays though there are many more opportunities for breaking into the Star Wars business, with Disney+ producing one Star Wars streaming show after another. This being the case, the odds seem good that Hamm will one day get a chance to live out his childhood dream of journeying to a galaxy far far away.
