The success of The Mandalorian proves the abandoned Star Wars spinoff movies should be reconfigured as Disney+ shows. When Disney and Lucasfilm revealed their plans for the future of Star Wars, it was stated that a new movie would be released each year. In addition to telling the story of the sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm began developing multiple spinoffs. This initiative got off to an incredible start with the success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Solo: A Star Wars Story proved to be the end of this experiment.

After Solo's disappointing box office performance, Disney and Lucasfilm moved away from making more standalone movies. In fact, the current plan is for no new Star Wars movie to arrive before 2023. The studios already had multiple spinoffs in the works at this time, though. Ewan McGregor was confirmed to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a solo movie, and a Boba Fett movie went through various stages of development. There were also rumors of Solo sequels/spinoffs being considered, a solo Yoda movie, and a film involving Jabba the Hutt and Star Wars' gangster underbelly. None of these Star Wars movies are happening anymore, but Disney+ could save the projects.

Disney+ has quickly proven to be a great home for serialized Star Wars stories thanks to The Mandalorian. The first season was a huge hit, and season 2 has already been a major topic among fans. The episodic format gave The Mandalorian more time to tell its story and expand the universe while giving viewers the same tone as the original trilogy. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story worked quite well as a movie, the common criticism that it didn't explore the characters deeply enough would likely not have been a problem with a Disney+ show. Similarly, the story that Solo: A Star Wars Story told might have even been improved with an eight-episode season instead of a two-hour movie.

Why Disney took so long to bring Boba Fett back

The success of The Mandalorian already appears to have made the same case for Disney and Lucasfilm when looking towards the future. McGregor might not return to the big screen to play Obi-Wan, but that's only because the solo Kenobi film has been reworked into a Disney+ show. It's also confirmed that a Rogue One prequel series starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor is in the works for Disney+. While this project might never have been made if it wasn't for Disney's streaming service, it should provide another example of what a past spinoff could've looked like as a show instead.

Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to announce what other live-action Star Wars shows are coming to Disney+, but it's easy to imagine several of their former movie ideas as TV series' instead. The Mandalorian season 2 has brought back Boba Fett, which could ultimately set up stories of his own. Temuera Morrison's return has already been a hit, so then the movie that previously had Josh Trank and then James Mangold attached to direct could be reimagined for the small screen. It's even possible that a sequel to or spinoff to Solo could find its way on Disney+ before too long. If they do, Disney+ will become an even more important part of Star Wars' future than it already is.
