Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron teases details about the Star Wars movie he's working on. Following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the studio produced a full slate of new Star Wars films, which concluded in 2019 with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm is currently focusing on live-action Star Wars TV shows for Disney+ (such as this month's Obi-Wan Kenobi), but they still have plans to bring the galaxy far, far away back to the big screen at some point. A number of Star Wars movies are in various stages of development.

One such project is being produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and it's set to be an MCU reunion. Back in January 2021, it was announced Waldron would write Feige's Star Wars movie, marking the third collaboration between the two (Waldron also wrote Marvel Studios' Loki for Disney+). In typical Lucasfilm fashion, story details for this new film are being kept under wraps. However, Waldron is able to give audiences a little glimpse behind the curtain of how it's progressing.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, the screenwriter hints at how "it's not necessarily a sequel to anything," providing him with "an opportunity to breathe a little bit and do something that feels really original." Check out Waldron's full, guarded disclosure to Screen Rant below:

SR: Can we look forward to a Marvel return from you in the near future?

Michael Waldron: Maybe? I don't know. We'll see. I'm busy right now in a galaxy far, far away.

SR: I know you can't say anything about that actual project. But what does it mean for you to take that on?

Michael Waldron: It's great. It's a dream come true. In some ways, it's freeing, because it's not necessarily a sequel to anything. There's an opportunity to breathe a little bit and do something that feels really original. And beyond that, it's just fun.

Waldron's claim that the film is "not necessarily a sequel to anything" suggests that it will act as another standalone contribution to George Lucas's space opera franchise. If such is the case, it may well follow in a similar vein to the upcoming Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue Squadron (2023), which will focus on new characters set within the Star Wars universe without acting as a continuation of the main film series. However, as expected, Waldron is unable to provide anything more specific than this in terms of details; and since the project appears to be what he is currently working on, it seems unlikely that more information on the Star Wars film will be revealed anytime soon - though there could be some surprises at Star Wars Celebration.

The fact that the project is "a dream come true" and "just fun" for Waldron illustrates that he is an enormous fan of Star Wars. But while he is unable to say anything more than it's essentially a standalone film, this will still likely fuel speculation as to when it could conceivably be set within the decades-spanning series. And with many Star Wars projects currently in development, as well as others releasing this year, Waldron's movie will be another notable addition to the recent resurgence of the franchise.
