Eternals director Chloé Zhao would happily direct Kevin Feige's eagerly anticipated Star Wars movie. After winning acclaim for her first two feature films Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider, Zhao became one of the hottest directors in Hollywood when her third movie, Nomadland, perfectly captured the zeitgeist in late 2020 and was catapulted to awards glory at the Oscars. Zhao was the first woman of color to win best director there (and the second woman overall), making her upcoming foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Eternals an even more exciting prospect than it already was.

Kevin Feige is known for shepherding the MCU to ever-increasing heights, but he'll soon take a step away from that world to shift over to one that's a galaxy far, far away. News broke in 2019 that Feige will produce a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, though updates since then have been few and far between. Loki and Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldron signed on to pen the script earlier this year, and he confirmed back in June that the entire movie is still in the early stages.

Feige's mystery Star Wars movie is currently without a director, but there might be someone interested in the job. In a new interview with The PlaylistZhao was asked if she would ever consider directing a Star Wars movie, with specific reference to Feige's. Zhao confirmed with a laugh that "I would, I’ll do anything Kevin asked me to do." He better keep her in mind!

Chloe Zhao interested in directing Star Wars movie

Even now, two weeks out from its release, Eternals' early reactions have been largely praiseworthy, with many specifically citing its impressive scope and gorgeous visuals. Those are the kinds of things fans want from Star Wars movies too, so this could indicate Zhao would do well with the sci-fi property. Going from something like Nomadland to Eternals is quite a big jump, but now that Zhao has one massive blockbuster under her belt, there's no reason why she can't tackle another. She's already expressed interest in helming Eternals 2, which seems to show she plans to balance independent fare with blockbusters in the future. Zhao also admitted earlier this month she's interested in Star Wars, thus making her an excellent option for Feige's project.

Little is known about Feige's Star Wars movie, though a few details have emerged over the years. For one thing, it will not include any iteration of Han Solo, and it's expected to be a rather unique project. Feige's hiring led some to believe he was being positioned to take over Lucasfilm, but that is not the case. He'll remain the mastermind behind the MCU, and so far he's only slated to produce one Star Wars movie. Hopefully more details will arrive soon to give fans a better idea of what Feige and Waldron are cooking up.
