[Warning: Lots of little Star Wars: The Force Awakens SPOILERS below!]
As the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens release date draws ever closer, our overall picture of the plot seems to be taking shape. Yet there are still plenty of mysteries in store, the most popular of which being just how Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker fits into all of this. Having already banked over $50 million in pre-sales, The Force Awakens has a lot of promises to fulfill.
As hard as director J.J. Abrams has worked to keep the details of his landmark franchise entry on lockdown, certain aspects of the juggernaut Star Wars brand seem a bit beyond his control, given that some plot points may have been leaked via the film's extensive merchandising. Now it seems that another piece of leaked Star Wars merchandise may have provided quite a few small spoilers for Episode VII.
Making Star Wars reports that several leaked pages from a Look and Find children's book tie-in for The Force Awakens have surfaced on Imgur and reveal a number of potential plot points. Many of them have been hinted at in the various TV spots and trailers, but appear to be pivotal to the overall narrative. Making Star Wars credits Twitter user @JaredLSloan as the source of the leaked pages.
Here is a breakdown of what has been revealed:
- The droid BB-8 carries important information for the Resistance.
- Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) is apparently Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) old mentor, and Han, Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) seek her out on the planet Takodana.
- A spy on Takodana gives up Rey and company to Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), who readies an attack.
- Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) leads an X-Wing squadron to rescue them.
- Rey and BB-8 are captured and held by the First Order.
- Finn tries to rescue Rey with Han and Chewie before the Resistance destroys the First Order base where she's being held.
Making Star Wars also claims to have confirmed that Max Von Sydow is playing Lor San Tekka, an elder on the Rey's planet Jakku, and who provides crucial information in the search for Luke Skywalker.
The sequence of events outlined here falls in line with many of the plot details which we've pieced together thus far and all seems like it could be very plausible, containing several extended action set pieces. With that said, it could also be highly over-simplified for the sake of a children's book.
Many Star Wars fans understandably want to experience the long-awaited proper sequel with a fresh perspective, and without knowing any plot points in advance. This is next to impossible in this great age of immediate internet spoilers, but nonetheless these plot points preserve some of The Force Awakens' biggest mysteries, such as the true nature of Kylo Ren and his powers, the location of Luke Skywalker, and who the next generation of Jedi will actually be.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
