Ahsoka refused to team up with Maul at the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars — but things could have been very different if she had accepted Maul's proposal. The final arc of Clone Wars saw the rogue Sith and the former Jedi meet for the first time, in an encounter that had the potential to change the fate of the galaxy. While Maul was a character originating from the movies, it's safe to say that his story and Ahsoka's were some of the best things Clone Wars brought to the Star Wars canon.

It’s curious that it took seven seasons for Maul and Ahsoka to cross paths (chronologically speaking, as they had met in Star Wars Rebels a couple of years before Clone Wars season 7 was released), especially considering how many different arcs and pairings the show had. The decision turned up being the right one, as the tension leading up to the first interaction between Maul and Ahsoka helped set the tone for the final arc of Clone Wars.

The end of the Star Wars prequels story was something that audiences already knew of, which meant that any chance of stopping Order 66 or Palpatine's rise to power in Clone Wars always had to end frustratingly. That, however, doesn't stop fans from conjecturing what-if scenarios that would have changed the story completely. An example of such a scenario is what would have happened if Ahsoka had believed Maul about Skywalker being what would bring destruction to the galaxy and joined the former Sith to stop Darth Sidious. Had such a team-up taken place, it's likely that it would have had huge ramifications for the rest of the galaxy. However, for all their combined strength, the pair may not have been enough to ultimately end Sidious' plans altogether.

Ahsoka Joining Maul Would’ve Been Darth Sidious’ Worst Nightmare

Maul became a loose end in Palpatine's plans from the moment he survived the fight against Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. There are many reasons for the Sith to only work in duos, and one of them is to maintain a certain level of secrecy. Outside of Count Dooku, Maul was the only person aware of Palpatine's master plan at least on some level. While Maul didn't know all the details of said plan, the fact that the future chancellor was a Sith Lord orchestrating the war was enough information to put the Sith's millennia-old revenge plan against the Jedi in jeopardy. However, Maul never had the manpower necessary to use this privileged piece of formation to his advantage.

That's exactly why Maul took his brother Savage on as an apprentice of sorts and traveled the galaxy trying to organize a crime syndicate strong enough to become a feared force. Maul did manage to invade Mandalore twice, but in both cases, Palpatine was two steps ahead. However, if Ahsoka had believed in what Maul was saying, then the former Sith could have had one final attempt at stopping Sidious' plan. Ahsoka was a pragmatic warrior back then, and would not be restricted by the Jedi’s rules. The coming together of two elements as volatile as Palpatine's former apprentice and Anakin's former padawan could have ignited a fire too big for Sidious to ignore.

A Maul and Ahsoka team-up right after the Siege of Mandalore could have also changed how the planet handled the rise of the Empire. Bo-Katan hated Maul for what he did to her sister Satine, but she trusted Ahsoka enough to believe her had the former Jedi told everything Maul knew about Darth Sidious’ ultimate plan against the republic. A planet like Mandalore having the inside scoop on what was going to happen to the galaxy even a few hours in advance could have changed the course of history and even avoided The Night of a Thousand Tears. Mandalore could also have served as a base for Ahsoka and Maul once the clones had left the place. Protected and organized, Maul and Ahsoka would have become a legitimate threat to the new Empire.

Why Not Even Ahsoka And Maul Could’ve Prevented Order 66

Ahsoka and Order 66 in Clone Wars

By the time Maul told Ahsoka about “the plan”, it was already impossible to stop Order 66. Maul himself wasn't sure about what the specifics of the plan were, as he was amazed when the clones began to turn on the Jedi. Even if Ahsoka had joined Maul, learned the truth about the Sith Lord, and communicated everything she knew to the Jedi Council, Palpatine could still activate Order 66 as an emergency plan even after it was discovered.

In fact, learning a few hours earlier that Palpatine was the Sith Lord wouldn't have changed things much for the Jedi Council. Yoda was already on his way to Kashyyk, and it would be up to Mace Windu to lead the Jedi still on Coruscant to capture the Chancellor. The big difference was perhaps that Palpatine would have less time to seduce Anakin, meaning that the outcome of the fight against Windu would have been different.

How Ahsoka, Maul, and Rex handled Order 66 could have also been similar to what happened had they decided to leave Mandalore along with the rest of the clones. On the other hand, if Ahsoka had stayed with Maul on Mandalore, then Rex would have been on his own and most likely would have succumbed to Order 66. Either way, the impact on the big picture would most likely have been minimal.

Could Ahsoka And Maul Have Defeated Anakin?

Thanks to both budget reasons and in-universe reasons, the fight between Ahsoka and Maul at the end of Clone Wars season 7 became one of the best lightsaber battles in the show and in the Star Wars franchise as a whole. Propped by a motion-capture technique, Ahsoka’s and Maul's moves revealed the abilities of two of the franchise's most powerful and experienced characters. Outside of Obi-Wan and Yoda, the only two force-users with any relevance to the story who could face Anakin were Ahsoka and Maul. The former padawan had been trained by Skywalker from a young age, knew many of her master's tricks, and had reached an extraordinary level of power as proven in the Siege of Mandalore. Maul, who before undergoing the Nightsisters' ritual was already powerful enough to face Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon at the same time, was at his prime during the Mandalore take-over. If these two had combined their forces, then it wouldn't be too far-fetched to imagine that they could have faced Anakin toe to toe—especially if the fallen Jedi has been caught off guard as Maul was planning.

It's worth remembering that even at the height of his powers, Anakin lost his fight to Obi-Wan. Anakin could indeed defeat both Ahsoka — as he did in Star Wars Rebels — and Maul in one-on-one matches, but a two-on-one fight would be more complicated. It is also true that Ahsoka would vouch for keeping Anakin alive, so the fight would probably end as soon as Skywalker was knocked out.

With Anakin out of the picture, thanks to an Ahsoka and Maul team-up at the end of Clone Wars, the attack on the Jedi temple and the mission to eliminate the Separatist leaders would not have gone as they did. Instead, Palpatine would find himself isolated after Order 66 and would have only the clone army to rely on. Obi-Wan would not have had to be sent to face Anakin on Mustafar and could have gone with Yoda to face Darth Sidious. Ultimately, even if Palpatine managed to overthrow the Republic, the Empire would not have its main enforcer, giving future rebels and surviving Jedi much more of a chance at fighting the new regime.
