Star Wars: Who Mark Hamill Would Cast As Young Luke Skywalker

advertising

Star Wars icon Mark Hamill has the perfect young actor in mind to the play Luke Skywalker as a boy should the opportunity ever present itself. It's been an amazing past couple of years for Hamill, who reprised Luke 32 years after he last played him in Return of the Jedi for the pivotal final scene in 2015's The Force Awakens; only to become the focal point of The Last Jedi in December.

This week has been a particularly busy one for Hamill, who Thursday - five days after serving as a presenter at the 90th annual Academy Awards - received one of the biggest honors of his career with a long-overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The honor of his career's achievements has brought about some moments of introspection for the veteran actor, as he's been reflecting particularly on his past in the Star Wars saga and perhaps the franchise's direction for the future.

In an interview with Variety in conjunction with his Hollywood Walk of Fame honor Thursday, Hamill was asked the inevitable question of who he would like to play a younger version of Luke in a Star Wars movie. And while Hamill says he's flattered by how people are saying how much Avengers star Sebastian Stan resembles him as Luke in 1977's A New Hope ("He's way more handsome than I am," Hamill humbles), he has an idea for an even younger version of the farm boy from Tatooine. He says:

"It depends on what point in Luke's life that you would have him be in the movie. Because at first I'm thinking ... the whole point of Luke was that he was bored silly with his life. All he was doing was bullseyeing wamp rats in his T-16. Now, if they could do now where they have five or six plots and you're cutting around what's going on all around him and they keep cutting back to a really young Luke, I thought, 'The one I love is Jacob Tremblay.'"

There's no question that Hamill's made a solid choice with Tremblay, who's been wowing Hollywood since his emotional performance opposite Best Actress Oscar winner Brie Larson in the compelling 2015 drama Room, and most recently held his own against Oscar winner Julia Roberts in Wonder. The 11-year-old's performances also clearly have impressed writer and director Shane Black, who cast him in his upcoming Predator sequel The Predator.

The next question, of course, is whether the idea has been floated around for a young Luke spinoff a la the upcoming Han Solo origin movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. Otherwise, there seems to be plenty of other opportunities, if not in a film, perhaps in a chapter of the upcoming Star Wars live-action TV series that's being executive produced and written by Jon Favreau. They better act fast, though, if Hamill's wish to have Tremblay play the young Luke is to come to fruition. He's growing up fast and is in high demand.
