In a partnership with Omaze, actor Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, watches his original Star Wars audition in a new video. It has been over 40 years since the original Star Wars hit theaters, featuring Hamill alongside Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, and the late Carrie Fisher, who starred as Leia Organa. The three actors created a legacy that impacted generations of audience so much that four years ago, Disney along with director J.J. Abrams, allowed the journey to continue with Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Now, the Skywalker saga is nearing its end, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters in December, and the start of a whole new journey into that world with The Mandalorian soon to be streaming on Disney+, it seems like the ideal time to be a little nostalgic. Hamill recently shared a fun little story of being on the Star Wars set with Carrie Fisher back in the day when he had jokingly put on Fisher's tight fitting hoth snow jumpsuit and Fisher proceeded to parade him around for all to see.
Hamill recently partnered with Omaze when he sat down to watch his original Star Wars audition tape and he had a lot to say. Upon first glimpse of the footage, he jokingly remarks on how one of the only things he contributed to the role of Luke Skywalker was the "Beatle-esque" haircut. He also remembers how on the day of this audition, it was actually the first day he had ever met Ford, who read opposite him as Han Solo. He quickly tells viewers how Ford is forever one of his favorite people and how his casting was just perfect because he actually is the "personification of cool."
A little bit later on in the audition, Hamill pauses to comment on how he had mistakenly called Ford's Han Solo Hans, and how throughout the entire shoot of the film, people were always flubbing up characters' names and director George Lucas just let it slide to keep things authentic. Hamill also comments on how when Fisher joined the cast, it was like the last piece of the puzzle came into place. He describes her as "effortlessly feminist" and not just some "shrinking violet that needed a guy to come rescue her," and in a lot of ways often portrayed herself to be a lot older and wiser than Hamill himself.
It's really fun to be able to look back at some of our favorite actors before they became famous or linked to some of these iconic roles that truly changed their lives, but to have footage of them sitting down and giving commentary and little tidbits of what it all was like - that's a true gift. Star Wars fans young and old are no doubt looking forward to being able to watch Hamill and all their other favorite characters as this last chapter closes out next month in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
