Jon Favreau may have revealed that Taika Waititi will be voicing IG-88 in The Mandalorian. Serving as the creator and executive producer for the upcoming Star Wars Disney Plus series, Favreau tapped the services of Dave Filoni to helm the pilot episode while Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow and Waititi are all confirmed to direct other episodes. But aside from directing an outing, the Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker may also be starring in the show.

Taking place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian will follow the adventures of a single-operating Mandalorian gunfighter played by Pedro Pascal. Other than that, plot details are still scant at the moment, but considering the show's time setting, fans are hotly anticipating the series as it will explore an uncharted territory for the famed space opera. This will also allow familiar characters from the original trilogy that didn't make it in the sequel series to make a re-emergence, and if this new social media post is any indication, Waititi will be bringing IG-88 to life in the show.

The battered chrome war droid has been confirmed by Favreau to appear in The Mandalorian last Christmas, and now, he may have potentially revealed the voice behind the droid's upcoming appearance. Taking it to his official Instagram account, Favreau posted a photo of Waititi in a voice over booth in front of a screen with a droid that looks like IG-88. Principal photography wrapped up back in February and Favreau alongside his team is currently busy with post-production which lines up with this latest snap. Check out the image below:

IG-88 first made its appearance in The Empire Strikes Back as one of the bounty hunters commanded by Darth Vader to locate the Millennium Falcon. It followed Boba Fett during the mission where he almost met his end. Waititi is known for starring in his directorial projects, the latest of which saw him voicing the MCU fan-favorite Korg in Ragnarok so he's not exactly new to this job, and if anything will be more exciting for fans. It's worth pointing out that Waititi may not be portraying the IG-88 from the original trilogy and instead is another droid in the IG line. But if he's indeed the former, IG-88 won't be the only familiar droid in The Mandalorian. The show is also expected to feature another familiar droid in R5-D4 from A New Hope.

Assuming that Waititi is indeed voicing IG-88, it's curious if this will be a one-episode thing or will last throughout the whole season, and at this point it's difficult to tell considering the secrecy surrounding the project. It will all depend on the scale of the droid's the role in The Mandalorian whether it'll be a prominent character in the show or his involvement will be nothing more than a glorified cameo. With a confirmed dedicated panel at next month's Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, fans can expect to learn more about the show by then and maybe even get the first look at the show with the release of trailer.
