Warning: Spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett episode 5.

The Book of Boba Fett just set up the Mythosaur making its first live-action appearance in the Star Wars universe. This legendary creature from Mandalorian lore has been discussed in previous Star Wars projects, but not a single member of their species has appeared in any of the movies or shows. It’s been assumed that the Mythosaur no longer exist (if they ever did at all).

In Star Wars’ world, the Mythosaur is believed to be a dragon-like monster who dwelled on Mandalore thousands of years ago. According to old legends, powerful Mandalorians could tame and even ride the Mythosaur. And though they seemingly died out eons ago, they’ve maintained their presence in Mandalorian culture. How much they’re still revered by the surviving Mandalorians is reflected by the creature’s skull being used as a symbol of their planet and how often it’s associated with their history. The most recent reference to the Mythosaur came in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5 when it was brought up by the Armorer (Emily Swallow).

The Armorer made a note about old songs claiming that the Mythosaur would “herald a new age of Mandalore”. She also mentioned that this creature “only exists in legends”. Her remark about it not being real came across as a pointed comment that the Mythosaur will appear eventually. Otherwise, there wouldn’t have been a reason for the creature to be mentioned at all. By suggesting that the Mythosaur is just a mythological beast, The Book of Boba Fett has laid the groundwork for the creature to make a truly grand entrance. Being told that they don’t exist will only make the Mythosaur’s live-action debut even more exciting.

In the same episode, The Book of Boba Fett created a pathway for the Mythosaur to finally show up. When Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) was cast out of his clan, it was said by the Armorer that he can only redeem himself by visiting the “living waters” in the mines beneath Mandalore. The mines have been destroyed, but that doesn’t mean Mando’s cause for redemption is hopeless. If going there is what he has to do to rejoin his order, it makes sense that Mandalore will be one of his earliest destinations in The Mandalorian season 3. If he really does go there, the door will be open for a Mythosaur to appear at last.

The prophecy mentioned in The Book of Boba Fett could be a sign that Mando is their civilization’s best hope for the future. Beating Moff Gideon and becoming the rightful owner of the Darksaber may have been the first step toward Mando becoming the champion of his people. If he fights and succeeds in taming a Mythosaur in The Mandalorian season 3, he could accomplish so much more than just restoring his position in the clan.
